Default What do you STX drivers want to do next ?

Are any of you ever going to try SM with your WRX's ... or do you want to buy and race an STI ... or do you dream of getting an Elise ...

STX is fine with me. I beat most of the SM cars anyways.

Thats funny, because thats pretty much how it is around here.

HOWEVER, I have yet to attend a national or divisional. BUT, then again, I have only been in the sport for a little over a year.

Next year, I would really like to attend an event where I can compete against all the big Suby guys in STX, all at once. (KC, Tom H., Mike K., etc) I would really like to get a real time, real world comparison of myself against them on the same course, same day.

STX also keeps you from spending TOOOOO much money on your car. SM would be a lot worse...

I was going to play in ESP this year, then came back to earth when I added up how much $$ it would take for tires.

At this time, I don't know what next year will bring. Before nationals I was all set to sell the car this past winter... but I kept it... as it's pretty much where I want it to be.

So... dunno.

When is the South Bend event in Peru?

SM is a huge expense, just ask me. I have what I think is a fairly competitive SM car at this point and if I told you exactly what to buy it would still add up to about $12-15k. If you really wanted a very well prepped car for not a huge investment in aftermarket parts sell your WRX and get a STI or EVO. My car was too far gone at the time or else I would have. If you put the turbo I have on an STI it would probably make almost as much power, and then it's just suspension work. The torque of the 2.5 is incredible when tuned and running with a good turbo, I did the course we had yesterday almost entirely in _3rd_ gear on the 6MT.

I ran on my new Hoosiers for the first time yesterday and they were incredible. If I run a full schedule on them though it's going to be a ton of money in tires. We have something like 13 more events this year plus the divisional and national events I go to, in my car that might be 3 sets of tires at like $800/set. Bleh.

A nice compromise for you guys is ESP

throw on the HEUG tires and all, but don't have to go insane with power and weight reduction.

Nate ... when the archived results are back up on the SCCA site ... you can check the STX VS. SM (dry) times at the National events ...

We don't have much of a chance against the light weight (2,700 #) M3's with tire up to 50% wider then ours and $5,000+ coil over set ups ...

you can run just as much tire as they do, and you can get your weight just as low probably. you both start at around 3,200lbs stock.

and a $5000 coilover setup is going to perform maybe .01 seconds better than a $1500 coilover setup.

I don't wanna take my WRX past "stage 2" power levels... I would rather spend that extra $$ on a 2nd car (NA MR2, Miata) than on making my WRX 10% faster (or whatever)

i'd like to close the gap on Todd Meade now that he's running STX locally this year. so far i've been thoroughly thrashed on in 2 events due to my incredibly poor driving.

i entertained moving to ESP this season, but the tire/wheel budget for what i want just isn't there. that and locally i was winning it on worn out Azenis at the end of last year.

Most of the national SM M3s are around 2900 lbs. They are like 3150lbs stock but you can drop a TON of weight off of them with things like seat and exhaust replacements, it's not as easy with a WRX/STI to shed the weight. The one Bob Tunnell drives is around 2770lbs right now with a different hood and no AC. It's not a M3 LTW, although those are legal for SM.

What makes them dominant is a 50/50 weight balance and the fact they have an almost flat torque curve from like 1500 rpm.

I have been considering SM someday. I know my goals would be getting within a couple hundred lbs from minimum, at least 285 tires, and around 350hp to the wheels using a 2.5+ liter upgrade with either a twin turbo set up, very efficient single turbo, or maybe a twin screw style supercharger to get that power started down low. Only thing is...... would all of this be worth 4 seconds a lap!??!

Or you could spend 25% as much for an F125 kart and be 6 seconds faster!

p.s. Nice job in the Challenge, Josh!

Steve, thanks. The Shifter Kart was another idea I had also, since I could do double duty between Solo and Regional Circuit stuff.

I don't think I'll ever go into the money pit of SM.

I'm enjoying the money pit of clubrally too much.

I get to run against Tom on a monthly basis... if I had it my way, I would head back to DS.

If it wasnt for the fact that we have a 'PRO' class in our autoXes, I would routinely be finishing 4-6 seconds behind him in class.

Those boys are fast.

Why are you in STX? You have an RS.... unless it's brakes that were changed. We had someone in our region start out in STX in his RS but he should have been in STS.

Mike King is local to me, but he hasnt been around much this season-his first in STX. Lately I have found myself, on average, about 1-2 seconds behind him, so I feel pretty good about that.

i've personally decided to stay in stx until i find another car (preferably something light, rwd) for track/autox duty. when that will be, who knows.

sm is well beyond my racing budget. (even stx has turned into $TX) esp around here is dominated by some very good drivers in some scary fast camaros and mustangs.

stx around here is fun and competitive. not just with the wrx fleet, but a few sentra se-r's and a lone 1st gen dsm make it more interesting.

What I am going to find more interesting is watching Miranda (Midnight Gold) destroy me this weekend in STX driving Tom's car.

I have already decided that if I can come within 1-2 seconds of her, I will be happy .
