Default Auto-X helmet choice/STi class placement

Well when I bought my car last year I swore I would put it and myself through the paces one way or another. I'm not much for drag racing and have always been interested in roadracing ect. So I did a bit of research looking into a lower cost alternative to track days as a totaled car in a wall isn't currently an option for me. Looking into auto-x seems to be the best match for what I'm looking for. That being said does anyone have any recommendations for a good auto-x helmet and possibly a reputable vendor ect. Also does anyone know what class a stock STi would be in, as the SCCA website is a nightmare to get any definative information from.

Sorry for the long post

-Tony

The Stock STi is in AS.

If you're only going to be auto-xing, then any Snell 2000 rated will suffice, either M or SA. Head to any motorcycle or performance shop to do test fitting.

I would suggest an HJC Open Faced Snell M2000 rated helmet... around $100.

Thanks guys, I guess AS does make sense, for some reason I remember some arguing a few months ago about what class it would be in, and I couldn't find it specifically listed anywhere. I'll guess I'llhave to start trying out some helmets this weekend.

I remember when it was in SS... that sucked a big one. Even now, STU is no fun cause the PAX is all funky on it.

You should have fun in AS. That car is a blast to toss around. My favorite part was always spinning.

- Miranda

*edit* shouldn't be was.. my favorite part still is spinning..

That may be a regional thing - we don't have a novice class.

get an open face that has the face opening cut back as far as possible so it stays out of your peripheral vision and get one that has a sun visor on it who knows which way the course will be facing till you get there. unlimited funds and total overkill would suggest a peltor open face rally helmet. i have used one and they are so comfotable and you dont notice the sides of the helmet. the beiffe jet looks similar and would probably be good too.
try asking at the grassroots motorsports forum too.

I like my Simpson LX open face helmet. I don't think I could ever use a closed face helmet in my car. I've used one for a couple rallyX and I didn't feel like I could see anything.

I need an intercom so I can have communications w/my autoX coach.

I went with a closed face helmet, i didnt like the open. I got the one with the most peripheral vision. Go with what feels best and what you can see the most out of!!
And be prepare to get addicted to autoX. I just did my first one last weekend and I cant stop thinking about going back. Its so much fun and you just wanna know everything about your suspension afterwards. i've been reading nonstop about dif setups and classes and whatnot.
Its a great time, i dragged all of my friends into it now!!
hope your experience is as good as mine.

Some clubs only allow for current and previous iteration of Snell ratings to be allowed. So that means the Snell 95 will be no longer acceptable next year.

Just a word of caution.

Snell 2005 should be coming out by the end of this year beginning of next.

Spring for a better helmet to start and then you won't have to worry about it.

Get an SA2000 rated helmet and be good until 2010.

I recommend this as well, plus you will be able to use the helmet at other events that have higher helmet rating requirements.

i went with a bell sport 3. for a full face helemt its not super expensive and its sure to pass any requirements that you might eventually be faced with. after my first auto-x i knew id be doing trackdays eventually and the sa 2000 rating will work with any school or track.

Personal opinion Bell Mag 5

I tried a simpson and I couldn't even get it on, Something with the way the forhead sloped didn't work for me at all.

I got mine from Helmet City a few years ago, they were helpful, took back the simpson that didn't fit, no problem.

BTW, I just ran my first auto-x yesterday with my STI.
I asked what class I should run in, and they said STS Novice.

I just got the Bell SR-Pro:

It's got the protection of a closed/full face helmet (many swear not to use anything but full face helmet) and a huge eyeport for visibility.

Plus its SA2000 rated, so its good for all that car stuff and has the fire retardant lining and such.
