I have an 81 wagon GL, and there is a screw under the ashtray at the rear of the console, one in the small tub just behind the parking brake, and two under a small snap on panal just to the rear of the shift boot, then there are two on each side of the console, in the footwell

THe XT is a different beast than most other older subarus. I dont personally know how to remove the surround, but I know there are some XT boards out there and also a couple of people on the USMB with them.

www.xt6.net I think is one and www.ultimatesubaru.net is the USMB
