Default high engine idle after stop & go traffic

Just noticed this a couple of days ago now that toronto is finally seeing some warm weather and humidity.

Cold start engine revs high- normal
Engine at normal temps, usual city/highway driving with infrequent stops. engine idles @ 750, oil temp (in pan) ~195 F -normal.

Stuck in traffic/downtown driving with stoplights every 100 ft, idle anywhere from 1000-2000 rpm, oil temps @ 210 F to two needles over 210 F on my autometer gauge. NOT NORMAL!!!

Once I get moving for a bit and stop , the engine idles at 750 again.

The a/c is off, and I'm not on any of the defog settings. The fan speed is @ zero.

To test to see if the fans work, I came off the highway, drove 5 mins into my garage and left it idling at 750 rpm with the hood closed. every 5 mins or so, the fans kicked in. Sitting there for awhile, it never idled high or go crazy.

factory coolant temp gauge never moved from the normal spot when the engine was idling high. or during any of the other times.

I checked all the vacuum hoses, and they seem to be fine, the two throttle cables seem to have enough slack. Tension on the passenger side cable is firm while the drivers side seems kinda weak but there is no slack.

I'm at a loss, could this be another 2004 quirk?

I have an 03 that seems to do that a little, especially now that it is getting warm out. When I come to a stop and put it into car, the RPMs shoot up, then gradually come down again. Sometimes more than others, sometimes none at all. It gets annoying when i'm driving in 1st and stopping alot in traffic, rpms go down and up and down and up every time... argh

Oh I loosened up the passenger side throttle cable, it was a little tight, but that didnt' seem to make a difference.

im having this problem too. Taking it in this week and hopefully can figure it out. Im guessing it has to do with the IAC or TCS maybe even the MAF? Anyways just guesses I will post Subaru's answer asap.

Throttle cables. You need to ensure there is at least a 1/4 inch of play in both the throttle and cruise control cables.

When the problem happens, you can verify this is the issue. Pull over, pop the hood. You'll see the throttle butterfly isn't actually resting on the throttle return stop. You can touch it lightly and the idle will drop right away.

This seems to be a problem that's coming up more and more. The throttle cables are just WAY too tight from the factory.

My 2002 WRX wagon started doing this about a month ago when I was stuck in a traffic jam. The car now has 107,000 miles on it, so if the throttle cables were too tight from the factory, I think the problem wouldíve cropped up sooner. Over the course of the month, Iíve had the high idle problem about 10 times. I took the car into the dealership and they were unable to find anything wrong with it, let alone duplicate the problem. Since I brought the car home, Iíve been able to duplicate the high idle in my driveway. I have a call in to the dealership in hopes of bringing it by today to replicate the problem.

I was talking to a fellow co-worker and she told me that her best friendís husband is an engineer for Subaru and works in new car development. I e-mailed him the symptoms of my car and hereís his response:

"1. Clean or replace ISC valve
2. Check engine mounts and pitch stopper for wear. If the engine shifts around the throttle cable will tighten up and raise the idle.
3. Check the throttle cable for wear and adjustment.
4. As a maintenance procedure, run a bottle of Chevron with Techron fuel system cleaner through the tank.
5. Un-metered air through the intake gaskets. Check intake manifold gaskets.
6. Is there a thermosensor code? Check ECM thermosensor codes.

Problem will most likely be either 1 or 3."

When I take my car back to the dealership, I'm going to show them this list.

well just got my car back from subaru and they said it was the throttle cable that needed to be adjusted. So far no problems but then again I only drove it home. If it starts happening again I'll get back to subaru and let you guys know.

Now that I looked at it a bit closer, the STi is drive by wire, righ? So there are no cables going to the throttle body, correct? What else should I be looking for?

Your dealer's phone number.
If it's 3 days old and you think there is a problem, take it back right away. Don't try to mess with it yourself.

I am sureyour right,....its just I dont know if it is a problem, or not. I am not familier enough with the car yet to know. What it does is when driving and I push the clutch in, but keep it in gear, the rev's drop to idle for a moment, then climb to about 1200-1500 rpm's, all while not slowing down, just coasting. But if I put it in to neutral, the revs will drop to idle again, but if I put it bak in gear again, they will raise. And if its in gear, they will stay that high untill I come to a complete stop. Doesnt feel mechanical, or like an air leak, because why would they drop if its in neutral, but not if its in gear? Seems like its being electronically triggered for some unknown reason to me.
Anybody elses '05 STi do this?

Default one thing to check

one thing to check that happened to mine, is there is a recall where the crusie control cable heats up and pulls i guess at some sort of throttle cable. it was idealing high basically giving itself gas, scary.
