Default My Day at Ferrari/Maserati Racing Days @ Road Atlanta

OK to start off, I was invited by Maserati (don't know how I got on the mailing list, but I sure didn't ask questions) to go to the Ferrari/Maserati Racing Days with the Ferrari 360 Challenge at Road Atlanta today. My invitation was strictly for the racing event and a "special preview" of the new Maserati Quattroporte.

So my friend and I show up at around 9:30 today. We check in, and find out that there is a special "invitation only" ride and drive of the Maserati Spyder and Coupe. I do NOT have an invite to that. But we walk over to the registration (which is separate from the registration for the preview), and the girl asks if we are there for the ride and drive. I tell her I am, we (of course) aren't on the pre-registration list. I give a story that we registered for Sunday morning, but we can't come tomorrow...blah blah blah...we made friends with her and the Maserati reps...

Long story short, after a few scares that we were going to get nailed when actual registrees couldn't get a spot (I felt bad for about 4 seconds), my friend and I are sitting in a bright blue Maserati Coupe Cambiocorsa (Paddle-Shift Manual)--390 HP 4.2L V8--just gorgeous. There is no rep or instructor with us. We start her up along with a dozen or so others and caravan around the area for about 30 minutes. We switched seats and my friend drove about halfway through.

The car was incredible. We would fall off the end of the row of cars so we could shoot up to the group and stretch it's legs. The sound, the smell of the leather..what an experience. The sound of a perfectly matched 2-1 downshift by pressing a felt backed carbon fiber paddle was addicting. The Italians can make a friggin automobile.

Here are a few sample pics...more at the links to albums at the bottom. Apparently to see the full size pics you have to copy the image location from the album into the address bar--the album will only show small sizes.

Maseratis are a driving experience everyone should have.

I drove a 3200 to a car show once with my brother(he actually drove most of the time). Was probably the 2nd most fun car I've ever driven. The whole experience is just smooth. Everything about the car is well thought out.

I'm jealous of you. We don't have those kind of events near me. Those who buy Ferraris and Maseratis in my area, will buy them sight unseen, and odds are their family has been doing that for years. So no incentive for such an event. The drawbacks to being in an area where "big money" is "old money".

You would've cared for this Maserati, or I would have had to check you for a pulse.

That's my nerdy face in the passenger seat. And I'll admit.... that's a damn nice car. I'm sure it was even nicer from the rear view mirror of iWayner's car as he walked away from it on the Dragon

Seriously though, I just don't really drool over the Italian cars. I can't explain it, I just don't.
