Default WRX making Wierd Whining sound in 5th gear

Hello,

I have 2004 WRX. At 60 mph in 5th gear it makes a fairly load whining sound. It usually occurs when I'm just barely pressing the gas. When I accelerate it goes a way. Is this normal?

Thanks for you help,

Dan

I don't believe it's the turbo. You can hear the turbo working under hard accelerations. This more like a whinnning..... It goes away when you press the gas but comes back when you let off. And it only happens around 60 mph and goes away at 65 mph and above.

Does it do it in other gears too and has it always done this or has it just started to?

Do you notice it more when your AC is on?

I hear something like what you're describing when I'm on the freeway with the AC on.

I have the same whine around 60mph cruising. Sounds like driveline resonance or something.

Check your tire pressure, make sure it is up to spec on all 4 wheels according to the sticker on the door jamb. If any of the tires have a different rolling diameter (and inflation is just one thing that can cause this) the diffs will be trying to compensate (as though there were slip) and you may hear some whining.

Final drive whine sounds anywhere between a high pitched whirr or wheeee, and it changes with speed/engine load. Turbos usually sound even higher pitched, closer to a canister vacuum and it follows boost pressure. I don't think viscous coupling LSD units make noise while slipping, but that can be ruled out by measuring tire circumfrence (they should be within roughly a centimeter or 2, IIRC)

What you are describing sounds like a typical final drive whine. If the ring and pinion gears are not lined up perfectly (both up/down and front/back), they make noise. When you accelerate, you are stressing these components which changes their interference angle slightly, and the noise goes away. I dunno about subaru, but several other manufacturers have allignment marks and shims that have to be installed/alligned to prevent this.

The good part is, it doesn't do any damage. The bad part is, I doubt you will get it fixed under waranty.

Try changing your front diff oil, or your rear diff oil as these cars have 2 of these gears. This usually does the trick on higher mileage cars.
