Default 2004 PPIHC Hill Climb NASIOC Meet - June 25th 2004

I POSTED THIS MESSAGE FROM JOHN ADAMS - HEUBERGER MOTORS on 5/11/04 and it vanished - wierd.

Heuberger Motors, Subaru of America and Subaru Central Region are putting on
the 3rd Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb BBQ and Subaru Meet and
Greet.

June 25th starting at 2pm at our store, 1080 Motor City Dr. Colorado
Springs, CO 80906

We will be having the following activities, plus more:
Subaru Driving Simulator based on the STi
Easy Street MotorSports 750hp Subaru (www.esxmotorsports.com) and other ESM
vehicles and their transport truck. Their team will be here to answer
questions and meet everyone.
Raffle drawing at 6pm (tuned up remote control cars, Subaru gear, and
possibly some Subaru Rally Team USA actual team shirts)
BBQ from 2pm – 6pm, burgers, brauts, dogs, drinks
Robby Unser Racing (Robby is driving a very impressive Subaru this year)
Gunnar Heuberger will have his B and Kit Car on display
Subaru Rally Team USA parts truck on hand for competing teams as Subaru
continues to support the racers
Several Independent racers will have their vehicles on display
Entire line of Subaru vehicles on display

On race day be sure to stop by our tent on the Start line for some free
Subaru sponsored water, watch live race coverage and get some shade!

As with previous years, any part or accessory (Subaru, SPT, L.L. Bean, etc.)
purchased or ordered (and paid for) on the day of the event will be actual
dealer cost plus 10% plus tax. This is a great opportunity to get some nice
parts and accessories at a great price. Our Service Department is also
offering a 10% discount on any service scheduled on the day of the event!

Everyone attending will be given a raffle ticket for the 6pm drawing. Must
be present to win. This will replace an actual ‘best of’ car show, giving
everyone an equal chance to win some nice prizes. If you are a vendor and
wish to participate in the raffle, please contact me for details.

I am again asking you to please RSVP for this event. The first 150 RSVP’s
will receive a Heuberger Motors and Subaru Rally Team USA t-shirt. Please
include your shirt size on the RSVP (limit 1 shirt per adult, must pick up
in person). The shirt is Subaru Royal Blue and will feature the Heuberger
logo on the front, Rally Team USA logo on the back, American flag on the
left sleeve, and the STi and WRX logos on the right sleeve.

As with the years past I look forward to meeting with everyone. Please be
sure to email if you have any questions or special needs.

Not sure if I can make the meet but I'll be there crewing for the Autosport Engineering STi. Who can pass up a paid trip out west to work on rally cars. I can't.

Hope to meet some other NABISCOTEERS when I'm out there. I'll be leaving the 19th w/the rally car and we'll be testing out in CO. Springs for a few days prior to the event.

I'll be there with two yellow Subaru rally cars. John has been gracious enough to allow us to service at the dealership, so stop by and give the crew a hard time.

Cheers,

Default update

Just wanted to give everyone an update:

I'm expecting a crowd of about 300 people for our event
I've asked Patrick Richard to attend, looks firm.
Travis Pastrana might be attending, not firm but looking good.
We should have about 10 rally Subaru vehicles for everyone to check out, including our Miziora (I'm told its a "greatly conspicious paint scheme") colored Robby Unser driven Subaru TJSpeed STi.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, however I must say that RSVP's will close Friday Evening. If you have not sent me an RSVP please do. If you have sent one, but have not gotten a confirmation (I tried to confirm with everyone, but its hectic) just send me an email and I'll check and confirm/add.

Hill Climb tickets will be on sale.

Parking, as always, will be the biggest challenge so if you have to leave early, please let us know when you show up so you dont end up 4 rows deep trying to leave cause it will be next to impossible.

Any questions, please dont hesitate to email or call me (719 499 5729).

Is Patrick Richard the gentleman from Rocket Rally in Canada?

I think I have some video of him I will post on my website tonight, nice music video with footage of him racing.

1 Question.

Is it $35 per car on race day, or does everyone need to buy a ticket?

Last year, they BARELY checked!

Should be $35.00 per vehicle from my understanding.

Patrick Richard is from Canada, you are thinking of the correct person.

I'm planning to be there. I just RSVP'd John last night. This will be my first meet. I checked the official site and couldn't see anything about $35 entry fee. Can my "stock" car participate in the hill climb?

I'm sorry, but you can't race!

BTW, if you are coming in from Iowa, There is a large contigent of Subaru's departing from Hwy 50 & I-80 in west Omaha at 6AM at the Mickey-D's parking lot on Thursday. Tag along if you wish.

Thanks for the info John, that is what I thought.

Who needs a ticket? Anyone who is 13 years of age and over needs to purchase tickets to the practice, qualifying or race day events in order to enter through the toll gate. More info on tickets

When are the practice and qualifying days and times? Practice for the cars/trucks will be June 22 - June 23. The toll gate opens at 4:30am June 22-23. Practice for cycles will be June 24 from Cove Creek to the Summit. Qualifying
for the cars/trucks will be June 24 from the start line to Glen Cove. SCCA Pro Rally Stage 1, Start line to Glen Cove 9am - 10am, June 24. The toll will open at 4:15am, June 24 to the public. June 25 SCCA Stage 2-closed to the public. Cycle qualifying will be June 25 5:30am - 9am. SCCA Stage 3 Cove Creek to Summit. Toll gate opens to the public at 4:45am on June 25. The toll gate opens at 4am on Race Day, June 26. The cost to view practice, qualifying and the main event (Race day) is included in the $35.00 general admission ticket. Check out the race schedule

When does the race start and how much is a ticket? The race starts at 9:30 am, however you will need to plan to arrive much earlier than that. The road opens at 4:00 am and no spectator cars will be allowed past Crystal Reservoir after 8:00 am on Race Day. Once you are on the mountain, unless you park below the starting line, you will not be able to leave the mountain until the race is completed. Depending on how the race progresses (no crashes, etc.) this can be anytime from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. An official will release your parking area. Use a low gear on your descent. Hot brakes fail! Cost of admission is $35.00 per person 13 and older. The single admission ticket allows you to view practice, qualifying and the main event (Race Day).

How can I hear what is happening on the course? Bring an AM radio and tune your radio to KRDO 1240AM for the live broadcast each day during the events on the mountain.

What should we wear? Expect the unexpected on Pikes Peak. A typical June day can start out very sunny and warm only to turn intensely cold with snow or rain. The best advice is to dress in layers. Remember the higher up you go on the mountain the cooler the air will be and the more wind you will encounter. If there is lightning or hail, take shelter in your vehicle.

Can we camp on the mountain? Camping has been suspended due to reclamation efforts.

Can we cook on the mountain? The short answer is yes, provided you use the right equipment. Gas or Propane Stoves with shut off valves are permitted. Self-contained charcoal grills are strictly prohibited; as are fireworks, open fires and firearms. This race is held on National Forest property. We do not make the rules but are obligated to follow them. Any violation will result in disciplinary action ranging from being forced to vacate the mountain to arrest and prosecution. Also, remember to dispose of trash properly - pack it in, pack it out.

Where is the best viewing area? It depends on what your tolerance level is. If you don't mind extreme wind and cold, Devil's Playground provides great views above tree line. Cove Creek is the highest spot below tree line, Glen Cove is also a popular spot below tree line. The Ski Area has ample parking but you will need to walk to a viewing area. Halfway Picnic Grounds give plenty of room for the drivers to exceed 100mph. Wherever you decide to view the race, remember to avoid fragile vegetation and restoration areas. Also, digging trenches, constructing lean-tos and rock climbing is illegal and violators will be prosecuted.

What is altitude sickness? Remember the race starts at 9,300 feet above sea level and finishes at 14,110 feet. Signs of altitude sickness include dizziness, nausea and fainting. Drink plenty of water. Use caution when consuming alcohol. If a first aid station determines that alcohol caused your illness and that you need to be transported down the mountain, it will be at your expense.

ABOVE ALL Racing is Dangerous - Please stay clear of the course and don't stand or sit where a vehicle might strike you. Likely high-impact areas are marked off. "Please avoid them". The Hill Climb enjoys an enviable safety record. One reason for this safety record is the good common sense of our fans. To maintain this record, we need your help.

Anybody know where we can find out standings for the first two SCCA stages of the race (Thursday and Friday morning)?

Are you fine gentleman going to have them posted at Heuberger (since many can't be there in time for stage 1 and spectators aren't allowed for stage 2 )?

I would like to know the standings going into Stage 3 when I can finally watch on Friday AM

Thanks all! 4 days remain...

I believe stage 1 & 2 are just transit stages.

Default Camping?

Are we sure we can't camp? According to their little map on the site there are camping areas at some of the parking areas throughout the course. I'll be coming from Denver and I'd rather stay up on the mountain Friday night rather than coming back really early in the morning saturday.

If we can't pitch a tent are we allowed to sleep in the car at the parking site?

Now that I look at it again, Stage 2 does look like transit section...but I'm still pretty sure Stage 1 is a run up the hill (Start to Glen Cove). I'll find 'em somewhere!

From the PPIHC.com FAQ:

Can we camp on the mountain? Camping has been suspended due to reclamation efforts.

Not sure about sleeping in the car

BTW, the map they use is just a generic Pikes Peak map so it lists all the designated camping grounds despite being closed.

2 days...

A lot of peeps on the "other" Subaru site are heading up and camping on Friday night. They are talking about leaving at 11pm.

Personally, I think my balls would freeze off.

Yeah, we camped a few years back before that nasty summer with all the fires.

It was a blast, but there was definitely plenty of COLD!

Recommendation: add one person to the size of your tent to keep warm (e.g. 3 people in a 2 man tent, 2 people in a 1 man tent, etc.)

Default Found 'em!

For those of you who are interested, some articles here outline what happened this morning at SS1 this morning as well as give some info on the upcoming stages before race day.

It seems Stage 2 is a night race

And apparently a Hyundai Tiburon is leading the pack so far

Cheers until tomorrow.
