Default Question: Cost of Living in Los Angeles, CA?

I am in the process of relocating to Los Angeles (from Seattle) for a new job, and I need to find out how much it's going to cost me each month to live there (sumitting my desired salary range today).

Basically I need to get an idea of the average cost for a one or two bedroom apartment in a decent area.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Doug

Gas per week - ~$30 x 4 = ~$120 x 12 = ~$1440 / yr

1-bed, 1-bath apt - ~$1200 x 12 = ~$14,400 / yr

2-bed, 1-bath apt - ~$1700 x 12 = ~$20, 400 / yr

By the way, don't come here. You'll only add to our insurance rates, you'll only add to to the traffic problem.

What part of LA do you want to live in? Do you want to commute? Costs vary pretty widely.

Me, I share a 2BR/2BA townhouse in El Segundo, 1 mile to the beach, that runs $1365 a month. I lived by myself in Redondo Beach, 4 miles to the ocean, and paid $850. Both are nice neighborhoods, though cheaper can be found.

Definately depends on exactly where you're moving. But unless you're moving to Lancaster or something, you will not find a two bedroom apartment for less than $1200 a month, in a decent area anyway.

Well, I will be taking my dream job...so I dont really care if it costs my soul.

So I should count spending around $1,000 for a nice one bedroom apartment then? Hmmm....that's alot.

Trust me. I will leave. I am very anti-Kalifornia....I am just going to come down for a few years then go and get my MBA.

Me making more traffic? Are you kidding? Its the other way around, Californian's are making more traffic in Washington!

Again. Depends on the area (which you've still failed to mention). 1200-1300 is on the middle to high end in some areas, and on the low end in others. In really nice areas 1600-1800 is not unheard of for a one bedroom.

Sorry, I missed that.

I will be working in Torrance. However, I have no idea where I will be looking to live. I do know that I will be put up in temp housing for a couple months while will be searching.

Any suggestions?

I know what I am getting into. Trust me. I live in a nice area in Seattle so I know that I am pretty much going into the ghetto.

Welp, check rent.com. Torrance is totally s**tsville, so I wouldn't suggest living there. What's your budget gonna be like?

You're gonna love the 405....

Seattle and LA are tied for the wurst traffic in the states, so I am pretty much just trading freeway's....

I don't mind commuting. I commute 30 minute everyday right now. What are some good areas to live with this typical commute?

Well, in that area...every five miles further away you go, add 30 minutes to your commute. ...One way. Good luck.

BUT.....a five mile radius gives you alot of different looks in that area, doesn't it?

And if he found a location with a surface street straight-in, couldn't he expand the radius to about 7-8 miles?

Check out RENTNET

You can find an apartment by zip code, city, or proximity to an address (your work, etc.), as well as other helpful moving info.

That is so LA, I am moving soon too and one of the positive points is that I can get to my grannys house on surface streets and not have to deal with the 405.
