Default Whats the largest amount of water you have ever drank in one day?

Went on a fairly long hike in about 85 degree weather the other day. Ended up refilling my 1 liter nalgene and 1 liter Camelback 3 times each (total 6 liters for the non-math majors) over the course of the day.

Drank all of it and peed maybe once. My shirt was soaked and I had swamp ass like whoa, but I wasn't overly tired at the end of the day, and I felt a ton better the next day, while my roomie felt like **** (he couldnt keep anything down.

My question is this. What the most you have ever drank (water) in one day?

And for those that can answer this one. Assuming there is some sort of super strenuous activity, can you over hydrate yourself?

Wow, I have no idea. When I'm at work in the summer I fill up my Nalgine bottle countless times and pee just as much. When I'm hiking, or other strenuous activity, I drink a ton without pee. But probably in the gallon amount for a day. Just don't know how much.

I drink about two liters a day on average and about 4-5 if I've been drinking the night before.

You can overhydrate yourself. I seem to recall a story a while back about a marine in boot camp who died from that. I'll look for it.

When I worked on an asphalt crew I would drink 2+ gallons a day and would never have to pee.

I drink about 10 or more pint glasses of water a day now.

It happens often.
People intake so much water that they throw off their chemical balance.

There is a condition for this and it can result in death via the brain swelling, organs shutting down, all kinds of nasty stuff. One must be careful not to drink too little as well as too much.

Monday morning until about 4pm
about 6 32oz nalgene's between the gym and a long hike....

It would take an enormous amount of water to be harmful or to overhydrate. When you are excercising, you can drink a whole lot of water, like you said, you drank all that and peed once.

Yeah, since the sodium/potassium pumps work on osmosis, overhydrating basically renders them incapable. Or something like that.

And you end up dead.

I've never kept track, but make sure I adhere to the backpacker's mantra...."copious and clear" while engaged in comparable activities.

You do feel really funny when you drink alot of water in a short period of time. I tried it one day when I was really bored, I got really dizzy.

For every gal of water you drink, tak 8 oz of gatorade, you should be good to go. Just put the water cooler across from the toilet, and find a nice book to read. You could go for the world record like that.

Thats exactly it.

The heart goes into arryhtmia as its a muscle and sodium as well as potassium is required to maintin muscle activity at the cellular level.

If you are exerting yourself and taking in water at a rate equal to that you are repsirating/sweating it out then you would have no pee and be able to drink water like a fish, and most probably should. If you don't replenish the fluids then the internal organs overheat as the body is unable to maintain/regulate its core temps and you et the same problems. You pass out and later wake up dead.

As with everythign else in life balance is the key.

more water intake than normal can overwork your kidneys. people have suffered kidney failures for drinking too much water.

Ideal intake = your body weight x 0.66 in ounces.

my weight = 170 x .66 = 112 ounces = approx 9 glasses (12 oz)

I'm not sure, but I did drink a gallon of water in an hour once just to prove the the problem didn't lie with the volume but with the milk.

What would you consider a long walk?

I for some reason don't require a lot of water, or don't feel like I do.

I hiked 10 miles the other day in the mountians, many 600 foot elevation changes along the way, nothing major like 2000 feet.

Drank a total of 20 ounces of liquid (16 ounces gatorade, 4 ounces water). Wasn't the least bit tired when I got done. Temps in the high 80's and 90's however under the cover of the woods out of the sun it was more low 80's. Maybe its the gatorade, maybe it kicks waters butt like the comercials say, i just wanted some flavor.

It also depends on the climate. I go on 5 mile hikes with little to no water around here, except for being thirsty afterwards. However, in the south-west with low humidity, a 5 mile hike with no water is dangerous (at least for me).
