Tapa means "cover" in Spanish, and originally that's what tapas was... you'd be served your port/sherry with a little slice of ham or something on top to keep flies out of your drink. If I remember correctly, the practice originated in Andalusia.
Anyhow, that's the plan for tonight. Taking my girl out to dinner to celebrate her finishing with exams, and we're going to a tapas bar. I've been to the place before and it's yummy; and I like the idea of picking and choosing a few different dishes to pick at over a couple of hours and plenty of wine. Tapas and tap-ass, sounds like a good Friday night. Tapas. It's the new sushi. Or something. -A

A girl that I'm interested in invited me out for tapas and sangria the next time I'm in DC. Methinks I will enjoy them.

I went once, and was unimpressed. I like to have one solid meal, not a bunch of little ones. But, that's just me. Plus, I don't like sharing my food.

Tapas are great, watch out though, alot of that type of stuff is ridden with garlic. Good thing I love garlic.

Don't get the sweet bread! It's not what it sounds like! Seriously, the Fiance and I went out a couple weeks ago to a Argentinean place, and she wanted to try one of their "hot tapas" I said sure. She suggested Sweet Bread, I read the description "try our hot and spicy Argentinean specialty" Sounded good to me. Well it's not "bread" but it does have the same first 2 letters - BRAINS
I couldn't even look at the stuff. ![]() It seems like this was common knowledge to most people, we must be sheltered. |

Oh yeah...they are great!
You purchase 3-4 tapas each, where each one of them is the price of a whole meal at a good restaurant. tapas = rip off |

Another theory about the origin of the tapas, is that some king made his soldiers eat a little something that was placed on top of their wine glasses before drinking that glass, you know, to keep tehm from getting to drunk because in the morning they had to go war.
When going for tapas make sure to go to a true Spanish restaurant, as in food from Spain. Argentinians restuarants have the best meat, but they won't hesitate to serve you the whole cow. I had tapas for lunch just today: boquerones, gambas al ajillo, jamon, chorizo, queso manchego, patatas al alioli y pulpo a la gallega. Over $40 for three people. Price? Perhaps, worth it? Absolutely. |

I thought sweetbreads were pancreas?
Either way, eating organs is kinda rank. I wouldn't touch a brain (to eat) with a ten foot polecat. |

Tapas suck ass... Went to a B-Day party at a Tapas place in downtown Chicago Fri night. Tapas are too much money for too little food.
For example: $4.95 - Chicken Skewer (single chicken skewer at that) $5.95 - Stuffed pepper (single stuffed poblano pepper) I don't have any experience with Tapas places in any other city in Chicago, but each one I have been to in Chicago has been a giant ripoff.... My $.02 |

I like tapas...perfect late night dinner, particularly since they seem to stay open longer than other restaurants. Usually have a nice winelist, as well. Good format for a party, as well...cook a lot of little things and invite a bunch of people instead of cooking a big meal and inviting 6-10 people.

lots of the places i go to have become "tapas" . . . same food, much smaller portions, negligible price drop. but at least they can put tapas on the menus. |
