Question 1989 GL 4dr sedan

Howdy all,

I need a few questions answered about my sister's '89 GL sedan.

I don't have much experience with that vintage of Suby and was hoping to gain some helpful info.

The car has 84k on it with normal wear and tear. She says it has an oil leak but I haven't seen the car in person to get more specific.

What are the things to look out for with this car? Timing belt, seals, etc???

Thanks for your help.

Will

Timing belt, water pump, oil pump gasket (mickey mouse gasket) are the things that are good to change

The leak is probably coming from the oil pan gasket, main or cam seals or the valve cover gaskets. All get leaky over time if never attended.

When I bought my 88 XT, the oil seals that were NOT leaking were the valve guides, the piston rings, and the rear main seal. Everything else (cam/crank seals, valve cover gaskets, oil pump [slight valve tap]) was leaking, and I mean to the tune of almost a quart a week!

It's a Subaru thing I'm afraid.

Yikes...I have read up on the valve cover gasket replacement, but how involved are the other gasket replacements (cam/crank/oil pump/etc)?

Are the auto trannies in this vintage troublesome?

How about A/C? Does that require anything special?

If I can pick this car up from my sis for ~$500 I think it would make a fun little project car. But I don't want to basically be required to rebuild the drivetrain/etc in the process.

Thanks again for the help
Will
