Default Road Atlanta June 19-20

Hey guys, just signed up for my first ever HPDE. I'm going to a two day event at Road Atlanta on June 19th - 20th, I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers, info, in-car footage of the course in a Subaru. Anything would be great.

btw: I have never spent $300 on an intangible item and been sooooooo giddy about it.

Mods: It's about time to sticky this subject since it's obviously a never-ending recurring kind of question.

Tips - in order of importance:

You:

1) Be safe and have fun. Don't think you're going out there to "race" anybody.

2) Learn from your instructor and others. Be social - talk to everybody and learn. You don't have any "competitors" there, just people who you can learn and share ideas with.

Car setup:

1) Good brakes. Good means they are bled, the pads are 90% or better, and there are no issues with your rotors. Using a good brake fluid is suggested and not that expensive - something like Motul RBF 600. Switching to an agressive track pad will help immensly, but is not required.

2) Good tires. Good means they will last the weekend w/o cording and have no obvious issues. Monitor tire pressures very closely (before/after pressures) and ask somebody there knowledgeable about beginning pressures. Using high-performance tires will make your weekend much more enjoyable but is not required.

These are the basics, others will chime in with suggestions that will probably increase your budget 10x and/or make you think you're preparing for F1.

Iwill be there too. My friend and I signed up, he is driving a 996 C4S (Porsche's 2-door STi ). Anyways I have upgraded my pads and will install lines and some motul before the event. Also plan to get sway bars and a 4 point harness.

I would also like to get some gauges, a header and TBE w a tune, but thats another 2k, so....

I've got lots of track knowledge and videos, but there are better drivers out there than I am.

Which event is this -- maybe I'll come out.

If this is your first HPDE and you are on street tires, then you don't need to do a thing other than air up your tires and listen, listen, listen to everything your instructors tell you. You don't need R compounds, fancy brakes, fancy suspension, or anything else to have a blast and learn a ton.

If you have a way to host, I can send you some of my videos. You might also get in touch with Penguinking and Tcarter.

Be safe, have fun -- let me know if you have questions.

My bad I won't be there. I am attending the Panoz Track day on the 20th of July not June. Sorry

Dont do anything to the car. Especially the 4-point harness. They're not safe in any way by themselves.

Keep the info coming. So far I like what I'm hearing. I have 39,00 miles on the factory rotors and rear pads. I have replaced the front pads at about 29,000 and they still look good. Do you think I should take an extra set of pads just in case?

My mods are:

Eibach Pro Springs
Catless
Perrin Up-pipe; ceramic coated
Ghetto-back exhaust with a cermic coated bellmouth downpipe
stock wheels /w Falken Azenis ( tires will be replaced by the time track day gets here.
Thinking about adding a rear sway bar, don't know yet.

Thanks,
J.D.

Yes, bring an extra set of brake pads. You probably won't need them, but it never hurts to have 'em.

Do you use Azenis to autox? If not, and you are planning to replace them anyway, you might consider the Kumho MX as a replacement, particularly if you are going to do more track days. A number of my track buddies don't like the way Azenis work on track. I haven't used them myself, but you may want to at least consider it. The MX responds better to the elevated heat generated by track over autox.

Rear sway is OK if you want, but really, none of the things you mentioned are 'necessary' to go out and have a good time.

Let me ask you again: which event is this? I may be able to make it out with you.

my one piece of advice - just be careful going into turn "11"- the car can lose balance there VERY easily. just ask anyone who came out in march to watch me spin out coming over the bridge....

Awww...it's just because you've got all that massive horsepower sitting right over the rear wheels...

Hmmm...sounds fun. Maybe I'll sign up. I'm a NASA member but didn't get any notice on this one, for some reason. Huh...

EDIT: Presumably I'm in HPDE 3 or 4, can't tell which. I'll have to call them and ask, I guess.

Oh, there are so many...pick the brand you like and go for it.

For certain, you will want to make sure you purchase an 'SA2000' rated helmet, *NOT* an 'M2000' rated helmet. SA is the only thing accepted for most track work. You can get away with an M2000 helmet in autox, presumably because of the lower speeds, but you will be required to have an SA helmet for pretty much anything on track.

Translation: You will spend more $$$.

I like G Force, myself...good value IMHO, but there are different schools of thought on that. Figure out how much your head is worth, then spend that much on a helmet.

I'll keep you posted if I can make it. If they let us ride together, I'll show you around the track.
