Default Impressions of STi and EVO at AutoX

Went for my first visit to an SCCA AutoX event.

I had the pleasure of being the rider in both an STi and an EVO back-to-back.

They were both about the same, but the EVO driver was a first timer. Either way, they were both more skilled than me.

Times were relatively the same for both. Ride and handling seemed the same, but some of that is obvioulsy dependent on the driver's skill. Neither one shifted above 2nd gear.

Outside the car, watching both launches, the EVO definitely has the cooler sounding turbo. I could barely hear the turbo on the STi. I was jealous of the cool turbine noises coming from the EVO.

The EVO also has an Auto mode for the IC sprayer...something I wish my STi had. Oh well...at least I have cruise control and a goofy looking wing.

The braking on the STi rides was impressive...I thought for sure a couple of times we were headed for the trees, but those huge brakes bring you down fast! I did notice on the EVO ride smelling hot brakes at the end.

Now if only I can learn to drive that well.....

-Michael

Yeah...I don't remember seeing anything in my owners manual about there being an Auto mode.

Does is spray anytime the inlet air temp is above a certain range?

Best I recall, the owners manual says the IC sprayer mists for 2-secs each time the button is pressed.

I thought it was manual, and have seen a $300 kit for the STi to make it auto...

oddly enough, i got to fun run both a STi and an EVO back to back yesterday. both fun cars, but drive very different. even with the EVO on Azenis (the STi was on Vics) i was over a second faster then my RS, with which i had taken 2nd on index for the day. EVO is awesome to trail brake, though i think the Azenis were getting a bit hot and it would start to push midway through the corner. steering and seats can't be beat. good power, great gearing. the STi was just a freaking hooligan though. much more power, better exit off the corners, no lag, lots of power oversteer . fun fun fun.
