MAS question...I think there may be some hp in there....(read this)
YO Guys
My friend owns a 99' Chevy s-10 xtreme and we are always lookin for ways to make his trunk faster (believe it or not his aftermarket is smaller than ours! ) So he heard of buyin a new MAS and that should add almost 20hp (hahaha.) Neway, he heard that he can remove his little screen in front of his MAS and this would equal the results as buying the new MAS. so we were bored today and we removed the screen. It looks like a little honey comb thing. So we took it off, reset the ecu and let the car idle for a while as I worked on my car. He takes off and comes back with a big ass smile on his face. He said that the car feels alot more responcive and he feels a difference. I never drove his car before but what I noticed is that his exhaust sounded NICE. It had a nice burble that it did not have before. Neway i never looked at our mas but do we have the same type of thing??? It would be cool if we could do the same thing. Keith

I have seen a few different types and the one you describe sounds familiar.
One reason for the honeycomb mesh is to straighten the airflow across the wire/film. Turbulence in the the sensor can give inconsistent and sparatic readings. Yes, its restrictive but I dont know the long term effects of removing it. |

I have no idea what type of MAS a Chevy S-10 uses. BUT, this type of modification sounds like one of the common DSM modifications. However, the MAS system is Karman based, not hot-wire or hot-film. The Karman system uses the honeycomb structure to even out airflow, but this also restricts airflow. If you go to http://dsm.org and do a search I'm sure you'll see information about how and why it works.
This isn't applicable to the MAFS on the MY98 and MY99 RS. |
