Default Sheehan update from Grand-Am Cup Friday practice, Mont Tremblant

Many of you already know that he is driving an Audi S4 this weekend in his Grand-Am Cup debut, in GS class. I have not spoken to him yet today, but based on the live timing feed, he is doing very very well, finishing the second practice session with the 5th fastest time out of 32 cars. He is in some very fast company up there, including Terry Borcheller ahead of him, Craig Stanton, Kelly Collins and Robert Julien behind him. That's pretty darned impressive stuff!

From the timing sheets, it looks like Gary is one of 7 drivers who broke the track record today for this class, and they have absolutely smashed last year's pole time.

In the first practice session, they were 15th fastest and were trying to dial in suspension setup, after having some major oversteer in +100mph right-handers. Looks like they've got it close now, because they knocked about 1.5 seconds from the lap time during the second session, and are right there near the top of the board.

I urge you guys to support Gary this weekend, even though he is not driving a Scoob this time. This is a major step up for him and could lead to great things....maybe even new Subaru things for 2005.

You can follow qualifying and the Cup race live timing tomorrow (Saturday) on http://www.grand-am.com/

Hi John. I just spoke to him, and he is very excited about today's progress. They had all kinds of suspension issues in the morning and were not that quick. They softened up the rear and changed camber settings to help in the high speed right-handers where the car was oversteering wildly, and that seems to have helped a lot. They ran on older tires all day, and will do so tomorrow for the early practice session, then go to a new set for qualifying. (Budgets matter with this team.) Gary thinks that the new tires alone will be worth quite a bit of time in qualifying after a few laps. So far they are 1 second off the pole, 4/10ths out of front row. But as we know anything can happen in the first practice....everyone else could find more time, too. I do think most of the other teams were on new tires today, though. At any rate, very encouraging for his first time out in this series, in a new car.

As far as the quality of the competition: It's an international crowd and a mixed bag, but in general pretty high level drivers. The top guys in this class also double in the Prototypes or GT for the Rolex series headliner on Sunday. Some are top notch, having driven at Lemans and in ALMS, others are big fish in the US sports car pond, like Stanton, Murray, Borcheller, Collins. Others also drive in the Speed WC GT or Touring car series. In any case it is a much higher level than Gary is normally up against, so it's great to see him right up there; a pretty cool underdog story.

They moved up 1 place to fourth in the morning practice session. At one point they held second. They made more progress on the car setup, still on the old tires. Qualifying for GS will start in a few minutes....let's hope for a good run. It's a short 15 minute session.

Smile They're on the front row.

P2, next to veteran Hainer in the other Audi S4 on pole. Not bad at all for a series debut!

They shaved 3/10ths from their best practice time and held pole until late in the session, when Hainer dove in with a blistering 1:47.609, to Gary's 1:47.990. They were the only two to get into the 47's....looked like a good inter-team competition they had going on. Third was Borcheller at 1:48.108 in the new Caddy CTS-V, followed by Cronin/Hayner in a 350Z and Stanton/Murray in a Porsche 996.

Well done, Gary.

Race starts at 2 PM EST

Default Gary Sheehan on the front Row

Congratulations to Gary for a great job this weekend. He has shown that he has the skills to compete at a top pro level. This is not a high budget team and the car could use some better shocks and more tuning. Don Istook has done a great job with a limited budget. Both of these S4's have the StopTech front brake kit and stock rear calipers and rotors with race pads. Gary is outbraking the American Iron and braking with the Porsches.

This race will be on SPEED Vision 5-30-04, and on the internet today at 2pm ET.

Good Luck to Gary and the Istook team.

Default He finished 11th in an action packed day.

He led early on for 14 laps, with as much as a 7 second lead. After the first fuel stop, he got back up to 4th, had a drive-thru penalty, came back up to 4th again and had some contact with David Murry's Porsche 996 along the way, no major damage though. After a 2 1/2 hour stint brought the car in for the final time while in 4th. His Co-driver was not on a great pace, had a spin late in the race and they slipped to 11th. Along the way Gary set fast lap of the race and fast lap of the weekend, and now holds track record for the class at Mont-Tremblant.

He's very happy with his experience; I'm sure he'll come on here tomorrow to talk about it some.

Other notes: Randy Pobst, Craig Stanton and others came to congratulate on his fast times...noboby knew who he was!

He drove 2 of the 3 hours without water, and was understandably exhausted afterward.

The car had a misfire all day, not sure what it was but did not slow them too much. Other than that he said the car was great. Bob, he said the Stoptechs were killer....braking was one of the keys to his fast lap times all weekend.

Great job, Gary

Note: I edited this for accuracy on Sunday after talking through the race details with Gary. I had a couple of things out of order.

Looks like Gary had the fastest lap in the race. Something must have happened late to drop him 2 laps down, as he was in 4th it looks like after 70 laps or so.

What an excellent debut. Front row on the grid, fastest lap, and passed-off the car while in the top five. Great job!

He made it back up through the field to 4th twice during the race, and on the lead lap. His co-driver's late-race pace problems and spin cost them a lot of ground. BTW, The penalty was for a pit-lane infraction: He crossed the yellow "blend-line" on exit. This line is there to keep entering/exiting cars from being too close to stopped cars being serviced. I don't think he realized he crossed it.

I spoke to him again last night; he was very tired but really really happy. He made a name for himself this weekend for sure, as consistently the fastest guy on the track. Lot's of people in that series are asking about him now. I think some new opportunities may surface....we'll have to see what's shakes out of it.

Note: I edited this for accuracy on Sunday.

Default Video of the start now up on the Grand-Am site

You can get it here: http://www.grandamerican.com/events2...videos_04.html

Pretty cool. Shows the start, and then part of lap 2. At the start you can see that Anders, his teammate in the other Audi, gets away in front of Gary. In the second part of the video, taken during the beginning of lap 2, Gary has overtaken his teammate who bobbled in turn 5 (lap 1), also allowing the CTS-V to get around him. Gary can be seen here flinging the car into the turn very hard and already has a bit of a gap out front. Just after this turn, (out of view), Anders stuffed the other Audi into the tirewall at high speed, ending his day and mangling the car pretty badly. Neat little video.

Gary Sheehan is AWESOME....I hope so badly he can get a Subaru in a top tier series somewhere in the near future....If not, it's still the beginning of some very big things for him, and I for one couldn't be happier for him......

Now, how do I get started.....was it in SCCA Miata's Gary?

Who was the poor bastard who backed his car into the pit wall before even crossing the start/finish?
