Question Strut Tower Bar Install?

Hey guys,

Got my CUSCO strut tower bars (f & r) yesterday and the instructions were all in Japanese. The installation looks straight forward.

However, is there anything special or a trick of the trade that I need to know to do the installation?

Thanks for the info. in advance.

I have a JC Sports strut tower bar which had to be removed and reinstalled recently when I did struts.

It is very straight forward, but it does help to make sure the bar is completely assembled correctly, and then install it on the car. Mine had the center bar flipped 180 degrees and it was buzzing on the air box.

Also, I imagine that if you were to install the mounts on the strut towers first, then install the actual bar on the mounts, that you might have more trouble adjusting the tension on the bar. But, I haven't seen a CUSCO. Ask Imprezer, he'll know.

I've got the front and Rear Cusco bars on my RS. The front was easy.. just tighten everything up real good.

For the rear, take out the rear seat (3 12mm bolts) then you will see the bloody-knuckle terror that awaits you. I used an open end wrench for the strut tower bolts cause I didnt have deep-well sockets or one of those cool ratchet-action wrenches. It took about 30 minutes to do each side. It takes a lot of patience to do this.

On the left side I had a problem moving the wiring harness that goes to the rear speakers out of the way. It was blocking the path of where the left Cusco (blue) bracket was to lay on the strut tower. I had to muscle it out of the way, on top of the actual bracket. This was rather frustrating.

Other than that, just make sure your bar is tightened from inside the trunk after you get it situated.

DON'T overtighten the strut bolts!

It doesn't take much to snap them (I didn't but more than a few guys on this board have)

Lightbulb

The three top strut bolts should only be tightened to 12-15 ft. lbs. any more and they'll break!

Thumbs up

GTMAN,

I just installed my cusco rear bar last night. The passenger side has the wiring harness running right through the hole where the end of the bar goes. What I did is take the bar apart take the little spacer out of the middle of the end and then feed the wire harness through the prong on the end. I think you will understand more when you actually start doing it. It does take patients but it was worth it. I still am running stock suspension except for 18mm swaybar and whiteline endlinks but the back of the car is very firm and much better than with just he swaybar. Good luck on your install, I think you will like it. If you have any other questions email me.

Question

Cool. Just did the front strut bar on my 98GT Wgn. I did 12ftlbs on all the strut tower bolts. However, I took the strut tower bracket to the bar bolt to about 25ftlbs...Tightened until the bar alone did not shake. What do you guys think of that, is it O.K.? Drove it around the block and di d not really feel the difference....may be imagining if I did. Probably be able to feel it on faster turns and freeway antics. But good in a way cus that means that the legacy chassis is stiff enough to begin with.

Now the rear bar is kind of tricky. I believe I need to cut into the interior liner . Is this how it is supposed to be done? Also how should the bar go on? I've narrowed it down to a few possibilities...but dont want to cut the liner until I'm sure of the bars orientation. I know there is a sticker on the bracket that I believe supposed to be pointing to the front. But, there are 2 ways to make it point to the front. Also, I figure that the strut mount surface of the bracket should be the flatter side...right?

Any suggestions?

Thanks for all the help guys.
