Exclamation Removing box air-filter for race day? Bad/Good?

Someone had mention to me before that, until I get a K&N filter to remove the whole air filter from the air box only on race day to get some extra power for auto-x.

I'm thinking about doing this, but what other things should I be aware of or do when doing this.
I'm thinking, putting something over the intake (like a fine mesh-like cloth) just to keep any small solid objects from getting in there.?

If you're going to put a mesh cloth over the intake, you'd be just as well leaving your air filter in there... they'll both restrict about the same amount of air

I've taken mine out for race day before, but it doesn't make much of a difference. For reference, here is my intake.

And yes, I use actual Subaru filters in there and drive around with it like that all the time. I will take it out come wintertime, though.

Bad idea.

If you take the stock one off you have to replace with a real filter a fine mesh would reduce the air flow down more that a good filter due to the smaller surface area. That is why filters have folded design or large cones to increase surface area. Also the fine dust (lots of dust on paved track)will clog things up and wear out parts.

Unless you plan on doing alot of tear downs.
