Question Tire noise and noise

My 99 RS has about 25,000 miles and I recently started to hear a humming type sound (comming from the back)when cruising about 40mph... Im guessing its tire noise. Does anyone know if the stock tires tend to do this with wear?!
(they appear fine with no uneven wear!)

Also... has anyone actually tested (in decibles) the amount of noise an RS can make without a muffler? I wanted to chop off the pipe/muffler (cat-back) and replace it with 2.5" exhaust + "resotube". The guy at the muffler shop says (and I quote) "Do you know how loud thats gonna be!? It will be blatenly illegal".

I question this because 95 decibles is the legal limit and thats pretty dam loud.

Not to scare you, but you could also be hearing differential whine or a wheel bearing.

Quite possibly a wheel bearing.

Thumbs up

I recently picked up a 98 Legacy GT with 18,000 miles on it. Soon afterward I noticed a noise in the rearend. I too suspected rear diff or bearings, especially since the Subie's seem to have bearing problems. Anyway, just because I didn't know when it had been done, I rotated the tires. Bingo, noise moved to the front. It was loud enough that it bugged my wife, and I convinced her to let me dump the RE92's even though they still had mileage left in them. I put new tires on and the noise went away. Just for grins, do an alignment when you get put on new tires, just in case that was a factor in the noise.

Good luck-
Rich

(Oh yeah, the tires looked fine also. Go figure.)

I am experiencing the same thing, once I pass 40mph. On another note I found that when I let go of the gas and drifted the noise would go away. And as soon as I pressed the gas again it would begin.

yeah I have been having a similar problem as well. Above 40 I get a harmonic hummm, it begins to quiet down again at about 85. One thing I noticed though is if push in the clutch and coast the noise is still there. I think mine is the tires but I am not sure. I only have 19,000 on my car now.

I guess Im lucky that I didnt cut off the muffler yet. Im hoping its the tires humming, but with my luck...

what about the muffler(less) issue? Do you think the RS without a muffler (with just a "cherry bomb" like tip) will be an illegal +95 decibels?

about the muffler, how loud depends on how big your exhaust pipe is. Gary (gg) had 1 7/8" run from the catalyst back (which is a bit smaller than the stock 50mm) and has no muffler, just a resonated dual tip. It's not that loud but very raspy. I'd say it's a bit louder than my car. (2.25" catback, borla turbo muffler, unresonated tip)

I have a MY00 RS w/ 5k on it, and i have noticed the same noise, its a low tone humming noise on the highway,(windows closed) if I take my foot off the gas the noise goes away untill I put my foot back on the gas. Now I just installed a JC Sports intake, could the intake be making the noise?
I dont know if the noise was there before I put the intake on. I think ill just swap it out and check. Any other suggestions. Ill post the results of the swap out.

thanks

I've got the same hum with my tires...
I've got 43,000 miles on my OBS.
It can be pretty annoying. I had the tires rotated and balanced, but they're still pretty noisy. I know I'm due to get some tires soon, so I'll just make sure to get some better tires. I think they're the BF Goodrich stock tires that are on it now...
