Default Say you wanted to put a Computer in your Car??? How would you

make sure that if you do build one, I make it Functional?

I will make sure that the frontend will look good. But I want to make sure that it is functional as well as stable.

Here is what I want:
GPS
MP3 playback
WiFi capability
Backup camera (rear view)
grill camera ( )
Touch screen
HANDSFREE PHONE ( Very important )
Voice Controls (prolly Dragonspeak software)

I think that a custom interface would be a key component. I wouldn't want to rely on a keyboard and mouse. I'm sure that if I use XP as the backbone, I can figure out a way to make the touchscreen interface. Plus, I can customize it anyway I want to.

Has anyone here ever put one in or use one that somebody had installed? I'm sure I could talk to MattJk about the touchscreen stuff

I'd consider a mini-itx machine with a touchscreen. Google on mini itx and you'll find lots.

You have seen Media Engine, right? Touchscreen software that you can use to control everything. Very cool:

I'm checking out my PM and the links......

If you check for automotive at the Microsoft site, they have a video marketing ad for something down the road. I only saw the first 20 seconds of it today. It looked cool. But the acting was really bad.

I am bumping a 6+ year old thread to see if there are more current solutions available for those wanting to get a more state-of-the-art PC Computor in their car.

For the guy that bumped this...aren't all of these things commercially available now in various double-din stereos? OK, maybe not wifi but why would you need wifi going down the street? Or just use cellular nowadays.

It has improved alot imo.

Prices have dropped of course.

mp3car.com is the best resource, read, read and read some more.

Those are starting to look better and better now that they're getting off 1.6, but the display is still resistive instead of capacitive touch. Although, maybe multi-touch isn't such a requirement in a car computer. I've been thinking about getting one for my 4-year old just so she'll quit using my phone, but I think they'll be ~$100 in a few months.

a good head unit can have all of those built in. Most have direct ipod support, and some even have direct support for Pandora over BT audio.

HU + android or iphone = all that you need

^this. I've had my kenwood for 2.5 years now and it meets ever requirement except wifi. I just use my iphone in the car if I need access to the internet for some reason. Native ipod/iphone control from the touchscreen on the headunit. I don't have the hands-free kit offered for my HU, but I've heard it's good. I do have a backup camera installed, pops onto the screen when I put the shifter in reverse.

Go for a closeout of last years models and save ~50%.
