Default Clutch Noise

Hey all,
I noticed today driving home from Metrotown that I had a squeaky noise coming from the clutch pedal. When I depressed my clutch pedal all the way to the floor, as I raise it up 0-1inches, a small squeak noise came up. It was only noticeable when leaving off of 1st gear.

Anybody have this problem? I thought it was my wet shoes going against the pedal, but I tried it barefoot and it still had the same problem!

maybe your foot was wet from all the rain we have been having?

for it to only happen in first gear is quite strange tho..

Yeah, that's about right.

See this page:

I just did this last week. You can use allmost any kind of grease to smooth out the contact between the piston and the pivot, and it's a fairly easy fix.

Don't worry, it will be back. When the weather gets colder, most likely.

Really? I thought this only applied to the push-type hydraulic clutches used on the 2.5-liter NA engines. WRX uses a pull-type clutch, and the old skool stuff is the cable clutch (IMHO the best-feeling of the bunch, but then again I don't have knee problems)...

Yeah it was making a squishy sound and squeaking a bit and it was unusual so it worried me. The service guy claimed they lubed/greased the assembly and wanted to see if it would come back?

Now I've got an 04 with a wacky factory alarm, a faulty foglight relay, and 1st gear synchros that were pretty bad when I got the car have almost died instantly (~16,000KM on the ODO).

So with all that and the new cruise control recall thing I think I will get the car in for a few days, but if I do it all at once it's not so bad right?

I wonder if a loaner covers a few days? Guess it depends on the dealer, unless loaners are a 'Subaru' deal?

Edit: I forgot about the 04 WRX surge under acceleration issue. I would love to see them try and fix it but I want to know what is going to be fixed before they start modding stuff. I don't want my car to be a guinnea pig for a local subaru mechanic.

Mine was not a violent screech -- it was more a benign little "chirp" -- almost like there are "crickets" living down there I get it on occasion every fall/winter or even in summer when there is a sudden night time chill -- I used to grease some pivot/rubber-to-metal contact points -- but now I just leave it be. Most of the time, the boxer rumble/music/radio just drowns it out. If I'm being attentive, I amuse myself with the sound it makes during double-clutches -- "squeak-squeak" "squeak-squeak"..

IIRC -- if you stop and park your car in the garage and listen to it, with your ear right up underneath your dash, it will sound worse because your ear will pick up all kinds of mechanical noises/echoes.

Sounds stupid -- but try wearing different pairs of shoes -- I found the sound exasperated by shoes with soft, pliable soles -- heavily cushioned/stiff based shoes give you a "more direct" clutch depress and tended to lessen the squeak -- YMMV.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, good luck!

Its not like I'm worried, I'm just fed up. I've been hearing a screech and feeling it EVERY time I depress the clutch. When you stand within 2 feet of my car and I step on the clutch, you can hear the clutch sound from outside the car. And when I depress it, you can feel it rub against something?...and its not as smooth as it was before the screech point.

Mind if i join, i have this same problem too. Squeak a little when the clutch is all the way down. Dealer geased it for me once already but the problem is like "wind-wet", squeaking problem just keep coming again. Is there anyway to fix it PERMANENTLY?

I have had this problem on the SiR. I went to the dealer to get it greased at every service after a year or so. Dealer says they can't do anything short of replacing the pivot arm on the clutch, which requires taking out the tranny. It is considered regular wear and tear.

I ended up buying a bottle of rust penetrant (basically WD-40) and I lube the pivot arm every few weeks. When I need to change the alutch, I'll get them to change the arm also.
