Default Logs of my ej257 and td04: Need help

mods:

ej257 w/ WRX heads
td04
Deatschwerks 650 cc injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Utec w/ Tuna
Full TBE to stock muffler (i'm getting a new muffler)


Short story, i blew my motor, then realized i blew the vf-22, so i put back on my stock td04 turbo onto a ej257 shortblock (STi shortblock). After that i got tuned by a local shop in houston, spent a lot of $ there for the tune. I was told problems arose because i had vacuum leaks (which they kindly fixed) and that the turbo is too small for the motor, but others have been able to do it. '06 WRX is ej257 with td04. So, basically what i did was swap out my modded injectors for Deatschwerks 650 cc, to eliminate the variable of having different flowing injectors. Here are some logs in about 80-85 degree weather.

Oh, and just FYI, i don't even use that tune, i'm just using the stock map which is working better than theirs (in terms of fuel economy at least, neither maps knock at all in normal driving situations, i rarely floor the car now).

Another thing, i'm not trying to give a bad name to whoever tuned my car, it could very well be a mechanical issue that neither they nor me have understood as of yet, but i have my doubts about this.

You are WAY rich when idling and cruising. You should be at 14.7 when at idle and pretty much near that when crusing. Pull some fuel out of those ranges in your map.

You never even went past half throttle in your "WOT" pull. You did hit 100 in the load column, but this isn't representative of a good pull. But, you are WAY rich here too. You could add a ton of timing too, just compare your timing to what the ecu thinks it should be doing. You are way lower on your timing values. Not that you want to have the same values as the ECU, but it does give you a comparison.

I'd try a few pulls with the tuned map and see what you get but be careful and watch the knock and the A/F. The map you currently have is definately on the safe side regarding your fueling.

Also, you never really told us what issues you are experiencing, but you definately aren't getting the power out of the car with your current map.

Oh yeah, the TD04 should work fine. Kevin Heist has a TD04 on his 257 and his car hauls ass.

It's a shame that you don't ever floor it with such a nice engine.

exactly... when I read this tuner said "the turbo is too small for the motor" i was about ready to call BS.

man...you cant say that turbo is too small for the motor. the 06 has that setup pretty much stock.

you can get so much out of that setup, but yes it is a small turbo. I'd prefer something like a vf30, which was good even on my 255 and VERY reliable when set with safe AFR's.

I want someone to buy my car and finish what I started Switch to accessport, upgrade the brakes and road race it!


isn't the 39 smaller than the 30?

it's not a bad autocross turbo, but it is WAY undersized for the 2.5 liter engine... it has ZERO top end... you lose power way early...

and yes a 39 is smaller than a 30... not by too much though...

vf39 is a great 2.0l turbo...

Well i'm already planning on getting an 18g, doing a fmic, and water injection... but i'm just curious on who should i get tuned by. I like doing things myself, but good tuning i feel is key to getting the whole car to motor together. It's no secret that i got tuned by Dan @ Engine Logics, but i am not blaming them. I was warned that the car would not be tuned 100%, but i needed it to get tuned irregardless. Now that i drive it more, i notice the horrible gas milage/super low afr, that's why i am concernced and am posting about the tune 5-6 months after i got the tune. I would like to just correct the tuning that i have right now until i get my 18g and "stuff" so that i can go back to Engine Logics, i feel as if the injectors did my modded injectors did me injustice on my last tune, creating problems for Dan. I'm gonna stop by their shop today to talk a little about the car as well.

Until then, what specific suggestions do you guys have (i know i need to lean the map up to around 14.7:1 during idle/cruising)

you've got a lot of room to add timing across the board. Your boost map could use some work. Personally, I don't like to have higher numbers in the lower regions than I have in the higher regions since this can cause boost spike. Taper the boost up from the lower RPM/TPS regions. I used to just load the boost up with one number from when I had the UTEC take control. It gave quite a kick in the pants when the boost when come on with the TD04. You can taper it though to provide smoother transition.

Check out mick_the_ging on wrxhackers.com. He has a tuning guide that provides a wealth of information.
