it was to aviod an import tarif on trucks. they added seats so that they could sell it as a passenger vehicle. thats also why they ended up pulling the line from the us market. when congress, i think, made subaru get rid of the jump seats, the import fee got to be too much and interest was declining. it got to cost too much to bring them here so soa cut there losses and dropped the brat.

on that note, i want a brat.

There is an 87 Brat about 15 seconds from my house in absolute pristine condition with matching camper top, dual range, about 75k miles on it. It's incomprehensible how much I want it.

But alas, I know the guy, he's an absolute crook, and he has $4900 on the windshield

the blue book for a brat is somewhere in the ballpark of less than $1K. for a brat in "fair condition" the blue book value is only $650

Ya, but being a collectors vehicle now blue book values dont apply so much to the BRAT... if its cherry, $4000 or so isnt absurd at all.

Cool Brat Seat Answer

SUBYRALLY You are correct, the seats were there to get around a 25% import tax on pickups.Bi-drive Recreational All Terrain,Thats how the name came about. And when the Brat sales were dropping, and people were complaining that you can't haul anything cause of the seats.then the seats where removed and it was sold as a truck.

That's really interesting! I wonder why the Baja is a truck then? I'd love to get a BRAT!

Baja is a truck because of ground clearance.

Does any Brat expert know if two jump seats would fit in the back of a Baja? Before I think to hard about this if somebody could give me the measurements for the jump seats from far right grip to far left grip I'll have an idea. It's just something I have been tossing around in my mind. I would appreciate someone's help!

I'm no BRAT expert, but I wouldn't imagine the jump seats would fit in the back of a Baja. Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot of room back there.
