Question Reserve is hard to engage 3 out of 5 times... Is this normal?

I've heard a lot of people comlain about the feel of the stock shifting linkage, but ever since I bought my car it has been often difficult to get the car into reverse.

Maybe 3 out of 5 time the shifter just won't go in, and YES the clutch is in all the way. So I engage the clutch (lift foot off the pedal) and then disengage it again and then it goes in...

I have a 3kmiles checkup coming up.... should I bring this up? Is this normal? Should I even care? Is it a sign of something worse?

HELP!!!

Thanx

What year is your car? Reverse on the '98s is not synchronized. Usually a shift to 3rd and then to reverse will get it on the first try without having to engage and release the clutch again.

Question

I also have a MY00 about a month old and have had problems getting it in reverse. Funny thing is, I had this problem in my last car (89 Civic 170k+ miles) and my Dad's 95 Integra. Any insight?

Reverse is always a PITA because it doesn't have a synchro. Just try throwing it into 2nd and then into reverse and it should be ok. If not, put it in neutral and clutch in and back out before trying again.

8's right...this is a common thing on almost all 5 Speeds.

How would you like to be driving down the highway or even a sidestreet and inadvertantly drop it in reverse?

Either just put it into 2nd or third then back to reverse and it's fine.

Or roll up a fraction of an inch and try it again.

It happens frequently to me too. Just that I've been driving 5 speeds since the mid 80's and the worst one used to be my dad's old 1974 Volvo 645. Man that thing used to GGRRIINNNDDDDDDDD into gear.

I have the same problem with my 98. Also, I sometimes cannot get it out of gear, in reverse especially. This cannot be normal, is it?

Difficulty going into reverse is part of the Subaru 5spd's normal operation. Do a search and you'll find at least one long, technical rant from me about it.

As far as it being hard to exit reverse, or any gear-- nope, that's not normal. Probably a slightly bent shift fork.

Thumbs down

Yup, my MY00 OBS has trouble getting into reverse, also. Rolling the car a smidgen usually works. I occassionally have the same trouble getting into 1st. I'm going to bring that up with the dealer.

I didn't notice it much when I first got the car, but I'm really noticing it now. It never goes into reverse! 10000 miles on the car now.

Have a Nice Day?

Gee, and just like all my previous rants no one believes that this "problem" is normal operation. Oh well!

It's normal!

Shift N-3-R and it will never grind.
If it does not want to go in, then let the clutch up a tad while in 3 rd to nudge the car fwd, and then go 3-R.

It never fails.

That's where it pays off to buy a BMW M3. I believe that their reverse gear has a syncro. Ahhhh, German detail.

Yeah, the M3 Transmission also allows a 5th to 1st Shift around 100mph due to it's synchros.

How did you say it...

"Ahhhh, German detail."

My gears are a little "notchy," too. I also drive an older Nissan with this problem. From a lot of experience with driving my Nissan, I've discovered it's very bad to try to engage reverse while the car's rolling (either direction - forward or backward - it doesn't matter). Other than replacing the stock shifter, I'm not sure what to do.

BTW - Has anyone had difficulties getting their Imprezas to start (to get the engine to turn over)? I travel all week, so I don't drive my Impreza until the weekends. Usually, I have some degree of difficulty while trying to start it up after it's been sitting all week? Is this normal?
