Default Campaigning the STi in any of the Pro race series?

I was wondering if any of you had gotten wind of anyone running (or planning to run) the STi in any of the touring car or GT or any other race series?

If not, any technical reasons/rules why it would not be allowed to compete?

I've seen pictures of a black one competing in SCCA T1 in California but I don't know who it is.

I just got to thinking seeing how well Gary Sheehan did in his race in the S4. Would be great if he could campaign an STi in the same series.

I doubt that will happen, he can't even get the WRX in, they're not magically going to let a 10k better version in.

In the rules the 04 WRX is already allow in GS. Now that doesn't STI or Non STI. The EVO is in GS too so I would imagine it will be in there no problem. Gary will probably not get "his car" in because of the front lip and wing and it's an 02 with 04 for body parts.

If the car is allowed, in general, I'm just wondering why no one has chosen it as a platform to race in other than Gary? Too heavy? Too complicated? AWD too expensive to run? Why are the S4's campaigned? etc. etc.

I guess I'm kinda looking for a primer on how certain cars get chosen to run these road races.

Note: I really have no clue to the rules and regs for the various series, and what sorts of platforms are allowed, etc.

Lack of RELIABLE big horsepower. The Champion Audi S4's of Speed World Challenge GT ran bulletproof 450+ hp. Squeezing that kind of power out of a WRX and making it last a season is not cost effective, especially within the rules guidelines. STI (2.5 US) is new. I'm sure folks are working on feasability of this powerplant right now, but ultimately, to compete with the big boys in the big series such as Speed GT you need factory backing, ala Cadillac, Audi....or very big wallets.

Porsche Cup 911's, GT3's, BMW E36/E46 m3's and 3 series are better cars right off the floor for road racing and have enjoyed YEARS of development.

Its not within Subaru of America's scope to invest and promote WRX's & STI's in roadracing as this is somewhat counter to their intended purposes and marketing...this may change, and I hope it does, but until prospective clients start seeing Subaru incentive they are not going to leap into WRX/STI roadracing in any big ways.

What he said.

No factory backing = no race cars.

Gary got factory backing for his USTCC racing. Thats probably the biggest reason he was there in the WRX (feel free to chime in and tell me I'm wrong )

Hey guys, thank for the insight! Yeah, I suppose with the 2.0l STi unit, the car would have ben pretty underpowered compared with the big displacement cars. The Spec C's 335hp is still pretty shy of the 450 that many others run. The 2.5l unit should be interesting to see what they do in terms of reliablilty. Plus the basic chassis development. Struts all around on a road course is not quite as good as the multilinks most have.
