The plug I am looking for is a "colder" plug. If you're modifying AFR or timing where combustion chamber temps go up, a colder plug is recommended to prevent predetonation and knock.

From AutoSpeed:
"The temperature of the spark plug's firing end must be kept low enough to prevent pre-ignition, but high enough to prevent fouling. This is called "Thermal Performance", and is determined by the heat range selected... A spark plug's heat range has no relationship to the actual voltage transferred though the spark plug. Rather, the heat range is a measure of the spark plug's ability to remove heat from the combustion chamber."

Hey, thanks for passing on the details! I got my plugs from Dan @ Harman Motive this afternoon and he even installed them, fo free!

Matt, again, thanks for taking the time to call 411 and get the details. It really shows that our Subaru brotherhood is enough for you, or anyone, to take the time to call and post the details to my question.

As for the stupid comment, it would affect me if I actually cared for your opinion any more than the opinion of the **** I flushed down the toilet this morning. Lazy, I'll take.

would it be better or worse if i installed colder plugs into my N/A 2.5? does the width of the plug make a big difference? I've seen denso has .4 mm and NGK has .7 mm. Thanks

I can't say, I don't know what your setup is like. If it's stock (or pretty close) you don't need colder plugs.

You can go too cold. Are you having issues now? If you're tuning fuel and/or timing, and not getting the perf you expect, you can try a colder plug. You can however, go too cold. Unless you know you need a colder plug, stick with what works. If you've got money to bun, try them out.

As for the size of the center electrode, the smaller the electrode, less electrical power is required to make the arc which in turn means fewere misfires (mixture not lighting due to no flame from the plug). IMO, smaller electrode plugs are better, as long as the material the plug is made from is strong enough to last.

Lotsa good spark plug info at http://www.ngk.com/sparkplug411.asp (Thanks Matt for the link)

- Ray

P.S. I was able to advance my timing in the middle RPM range (4000 - 5500) up 3 degrees after replacing my old worn plugs that were stock with the BKR7EIX plug. This is on the stock turbo running 16.5, with a middle of the road fuel tune on my tired 64K miles engine.
