Clunks, creaks, rattles and whines...
My 2000 RS has been making a few too many noises lately for my liking - I have hypersensitive ears and turning up the crap stock stereo to cover up the noises just makes the aural assault worse!
Here they are in decreasing order of annoyance: 1. A slightly hollow sounding and not very loud clunk from either side of the rear end, only when cornering moderately hard or cornering over bumps. It's usually 2-3 clunks in quick succession and they come from only one side or the other, never both sides at once. My theories: - Minnam exhaust is a bit wiggly on it's hangers and the resonator does have slight marks on it where it's hit the heat shielding. But not matter how much I shake the exhaust around by hand while the car is parked, I can't get any clunks out of it. - Minnam-installed Cusco 21 mm sway bar bushings appear to be really heavily squished between the brackets and the bar, and I don't remember them unpacking any new bushings when they unpacked the sway bar (I was in their shop at the time). Could they possibly (gasp!) have used the stock bushings? I assume this could cause some serious binding. 2. Creaking from the back of the car (as though it's flexing) under the same conditions as the previous noise, but it sounds like it's inside the cabin. It may not be, as these sounds can be tricky little buggers to track down. 3. A nice little "crunch" when shifting lazily into 3rd. Hard shifts seem better. 4. Distinct (but not worryingly loud) metallic tickety-tick from the engine around 2000-2500 rpm while cruising. Never noticed this before, but it may have been there when I bought the car. Oil was recently changed at the dealer. 5. Rattles from driver's side window, rear speaker and center of dash. 6. Transmission whine when accelerating from a stop. Again noticeable but not bothersome, and louder than any other car I've owned expect my MR2 Supercharged which needed a tranny rebuild. 7. Now that the weather's warm and I drive with my windows down, I can actually hear the stock tires start to squirm and squeal under absurdly low cornering loads. Are they really that awful? Pressures are 36F/33R. Ahhh! I feel better now that I've vented. Note that passengers in the car almost never hear any of these sounds until I painstakingly point them out. Maybe I'm noiseophobic! BTW, lest I sound a bit negative, I LOVE driving my Subie and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Well, I would trade it for a new 911 Turbo! Any ideas/suggestions/comforting words?

I have many Noises in my 002.5RS as well. I also get very annoyed at every chirp, squeek and rattle. It's enough to drive me insane. Sadly, there will never be a car that does not make noises. Just have to learn how to live with them or go through the pain and hassle of figuring out what makes the noise and spending time and usually money to solve the problem. I am still learning how to deal with all my squeeks and rattles. I will let you know if I discover a cure all before I go insane.

Let's see...
1. You'd be surprised how much a part of your car can move under cornering, I too suspect the exhaust, especially if you can see marks where it has hit. Or, check to make sure your jack is in solidly... I found out how it was put in/taken out this weekend and I'm not very confident in it. 2. No clue, mine creaks like nuts when I pull slowly out of a driveway on an angle. 3. Get it to your dealer and point it out, the synchros have been known to be bad in RS's. 4. This engine is the loudest, noisyest engine that I've heard in a long time come off a showroom floor. I just figure that it is a normal sound from the horizontally opposed engines since the old Bug's engines used to tick a lot too and I know some Porsche's do as well. 5. I've got more then that, feel lucky. 6. That is the sound of the center differential, I believe. It is completely normal and if you hear a WRX or 22B, I believe it is even more noticible. 7. The stock tires suck. I keep mine at 40/36 for street driving (cold) and around 48/40 (warm) for autocrosses. Trust me, you're not alone in hearing those noises. |

Here ya go!
1. Check the spare tire & jack in the trunk, if not secured well, they are a common source of noise. If the bushings on your 21mm sway bay are 13mm...not good . 2. Normal chassis flex, both my Impreza'a do it. 3. ? Don't know 4. Normal 5. Take it to the dealer, stuff is loose! Especially the door & speaker. 6. Check the tranny fluid level, mine was very low from the dealership! 7. The RE92's ARE that bad! Hope this helped! |
