transmission lock up

hello, has anyone encountered this problem? transmission locks up when you take your foot off of the accelerator. 1987 gl-10 turbo 4wd wagon. car runs and shifts fine as long as your on the gas.

Stick or Auto?

When you let off the gas, you say everything locks up.. so the front tires stop spinning and just skid as though you had put the brake on?

Any funky noises?

I have heard of the front diffs on the autos locking up. not quite in the manner you described, but that would be my guess. it would explain why it still shifts well, as the front diff, while it is in the tranny is seperate from the parts that actually make it shift.

Fix : convert it to a manual

it's an auto that i'm considering purchasing it's weird that if your on the gas it works fine but let off the pedal and it locks up, is there some sort of sensor that may be the problem something to do with the gas pedal? thanks for the reply

Its an 87, so I assume its the 3 speed auto.. no sensors there.. My money is on the front diff. Buy it cheapo and put a 5 speed in there.. Its easy.
