Question Oh no! Not another clunking thread!

And yes, I tried searching.

Here's my setup (GC8): Whiteline front and rear swaybars and endlinks. 165,000 miles.

I get a clunking from the front of the car at very slow speeds, straight line, over rough pavement. The sound comes from both sides at random, and I can occasionally feel it through the steering wheel. As it is becoming more frequent, I am also hearing it at speeds up to 60mph when I hit short, sharp bumps or depressions.

It is NOT a wheel bearing or CV (Both sides are new). The sway bars have been on the car for at least 100k miles, so I really don't think that is the problem, and I recently lubed those bushings.

I think I have it narrowed down to the control arm bushings being worn out; there is some play when I stick a pry bar in there and wiggle it around.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or similar experience?

Heh. I forgot all about this thread.

It turns out that it was either the bushings that connect the front control arms to the frame of the car, or the top mounts. I replaced them at the same time, and the sound went bye-bye. If I had to narrow it down, I'd say it was the bushings; there was significant play when I stuck a pry bar and wiggled.

Wasn't a ball joint: I had replaced both of the front ball joints not too long prior. Now that I think about it, just about everything related to the front suspension/steering/wheels has been replaced.

I hope this helps.
