Default is this sound anything to worry about?

Hi all,
When I'm cruising down the highway, 45 mph+, i've noticed a faint, smooth, noise. Perhaps like some sort of friction. It almost sounds like it would be road noise except that it is silent when turning the wheel to the right. Its very faint, I only noticed it because I had the radio off, but it struck my curiousity. We've never replaced the CV joints or shafts, but the boots are in good shape. 209k mi. One boot was replaced a year or two ago. The car drives as smooth as always, minus the 60+ shimmy I'd thought was normal on all of them. Any thoughts or am I just paranoid?
thanks,
Brian

DOJ or wheel bearing would be my bet. Nothing to worry about ... yet... it will be sometime down the road though.

I was poking around under there, and on the left half axle, i can pull it toward the wheel considerably, enough for it to clank against whatever it hits whatever is at the end of it (socket?)...could this give a more accurate diagnosis?

ummm.. odd description...

Is it possible the large nut(castle nut) on the end of the axle isn't tight.

A little side to side play is normal.

Bring it over and I'll have a look at it for you

Theres at least 2in of play in the DOJ(ok, I might be exagerating a little), but its still alot. I wouldnt worry about it. It sounds more like tire noise your hearing. How much tread is on the tires? And what kind of tires/tread are they?

The tires are pretty new, I might check the castle nut. Otherwise, if some free play is normal on the shaft, I'll just drive 'er and see what happens. Thanks guys.
