Default Vf-34 or VF-39:which one do you like better??

Alright guys it is time to beef up my Rex with a turbo upgrade. The only problem is, I cant decide between the vf-34 and the vf-39. I hear that the two turbos are very much alike, and that the only difference is that the 34 is ball-bearing, and the 34 can handle alot more boost. I have a buddy who is willing to sell me his vf-39 with 50 miles for $200(very cheap), and he is also willing to sell me a vf-34 for $500(brand new). Personally I would like to get the 34, but i am not sure if it is worth the extra $$. Please someone guide me in the right direction so i can throw this turbo in and start beating my brothers RX-7(by the way my cousin has an STI... tough family) Thanks guys.

they're simliar turbos mostly known for spool up as apposed to top end.. for 200 just take the VF39...

And if your buddy wants to sell the 34 a good friend of mine would happily take it off his hands.

VF 30 is the choice. You probably won't get there with a 39 unless you add a bunch of other mods which will exceed the $300 price difference.

But a Green wouldn't make boost until much much later in the power train, and he'd need a new transmission soon enough with it.

The 34 has a bigger exaust housing/wheel on it and makes more top end power which would be the best for 1/4 mile. the 39 is the exact same but the exaust housing/wheel is smaller, so it will spool faster and have a harder mid range punch, but the top end wont be the same. a vf-39 in theory should make less overall hp compared to the 34 but im not sure, be cause theres not much proof available.

Well from what i know the vf-39 is the turbo off the US sti right??? think of it this way alot of guys with the sti swap out the vf-39 for the vf-34. that should answer your question.

Yes, the VF-39 is on the V8 USDM STi (2.5L) IIRC, they aer right about it's spool characteristics in that it is quik, but the top end isn't there. For $200, go VF-39 and cal it good. After that, if ya want 300+ WHP, look into a Garrett (GT25RS) or maybe one of the PE turbos (1820 perhaps). This is just my .02

Cool

The VF 39 sounds good but have you thought about a VF41? Has anyone even tried the VF41? Just a thought!!

You would need different intercooler hoses with the VF39 right?

Question

Your question means you have not seen or heard of the new IHI VF41 yet. Dang I was hoping someone would have information on it I have seen it a couple of times but do not know of anyone running one!! I was curious of what kind of power it had!!

I am not familiar with that IHI model. Where did you read/hear about a new model? If in fact it is a new unit and IHI is in keeping with their numbering convention- this will undoubtably be the smallest turbo, with the VF-22 being the largest.

I have the VF39 and many friends with VF34. The VF39 does spool a tad faster, but the VF34 pulls stronger to the redline.

Check out this thread. It was originally posted by Jermaine from TXS..he's running a 39 on a 2.0. I see he removed the dyno graph but IIRC he was pushing somewhere around 315 whp. I am currently running a 39. It spools pretty quickly, torgue peak is around 3500-3700 rpm. I am surrently @ around 250 whp 240 wtq, with only around1 bar, sometimes less. I find the car hold boost pretty well, and I am enjoying the turbo..
