Default Looking to relocate to FL.. any jobs in the Palm Bay/Melbourne/Orlando/Kissime area?

Just wondering if anyone has any good leads on jobs in the areas mentioned above? Management/non-entry positions related to econometrics, economics, finance, efficiency analysis, data mining, logistics, materials acquisition/procurement etc. In the Energy/Utilities sector, or automotive would be ideal

Gettin' a little tired of the long Canadian winters j/j

Don't do it....trust me.....unless you have a job lined up and the ink is dry...don't do it.
You would be totally shocked to know how little you may be paid to work here.
Stunned may be a much better word than shocked, really.

Uncle Scotty - interesting.... I'm guessing I should just make Florida a winter vacation spot then

Being that there is no "minimum wage" in the US... I'm guessing that's why wages are relatively low?

Up here for positions I've mentioned, I'm used to getting $25US+/hr. Guess there aren't too many places that can afford this kind of salary

dood....if you got $US10/hr...that would be considered pretty good pay in a lot of places, here...

There is a minimum wage...but florida is a 'right to work' state = no unions = low paid slavery.
Employees get treated like toilet paper and that's that.

No, no -- finance will pay you much more than that. GTB -- lots of ManufacturingCo. down here will pay you good jack for procurement. I work for Metretek but they're are tons others. We are looking for buyers I think.

Uncle Scotty - whoa $10/hr that's like nothing! I hope that's for people that don't hold any degrees!

For the public sector there are unions here as well, but in the private sector there are no unions. Minimum wage here in AB is ~ $5US/hr (McD's type of jobs). Average salary for a University grad w/o experience is ~$25K US/yr (arts student) to ~$41K US/yr for Bcomm or BSc Engineering.

XRayHipp - You've got a PM & email!

Can anyone comfirm whether or not this is true... I heard there is no state income tax in Florida? Sounds almost like good ol' Alberta then if that's true (Alberta has the lowest Provincial Income Tax in Canada).

It's true - no state income tax. Scotty makes some good points about the pitfalls of moving here. On average it appears income is lower here in Florida. A lower cost of living offsets this however.

There is no state income tax. We can thank the tourists for that. Minimum wage is $5.15.

I did some recruiting for Northrop Grumman, and they were looking for a few procurement people so you may want to check them out. wages are always negotiable for procurement (they are very flexible) dependent on experience, security clearance, ext.

check it out: http://careers.northropgrumman.com/E...gory=selectAll

Maybe in Orlando there is a lower cost of living. Down in Miami look at high insurance rates, $200-300K for a new home thats not in the hood...170k for those I spend an avarage of $300 a week in groceries for 2 adults and two kids. Our property taxes are murder, thats how we get away with no state taxes well that and like a 40cent tax on gas and 7% sales tax on everything under 5k. The area you are looking at has a lot of tech and engineering jobs but most of those are looking for highly trained people who may have been layed off recent telecomm disater.
Good luck, I hope you find something.

barkall4 - thanks for the lead I hope that being Canadian won't hinder my chances of being hired

Fernely - yeah I remember Miami was pretty crazy when I was down there... house prices almost sound as crazy as up here in Calgary... average house price even in the hood is ~$150K USD houses in the decent neighbourhoods is $200-300K++

Thank god that at least our food prices aren't too bad. We do have crazy gasoline tax though~ at more then $2.50US/gallon over 40% of that is taxes alone

If you're a dual citizen, no. If you're authorized to work in the US, then no again.

Poseur2000 - nope not a dual citizen... fiancee is American though! I read somewhere on the US Immigration website that once I have an official job offer that the US Embassy will issue a Work Visa or something to that affect.

I believe that is partly correct. The job offer must be for something that is in need in that area and must be "professional" in nature. For example an offer from Burger King won't do. But an offer from Boeing would.

Again, I'm no expert in immigration laws but being Canadian as well I've come across some of which you ask about.

Poseur2000 - cool thanks for the help I've got an interview in Melborne for the position of operating manager for company... hopefully that'll be enough I don't want to finish off another degree in Engineering and get my P.Eng before moving down. My double degree will hopefully land me a job that's considered "professional"

Since I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket, hopefully I can line up several more interviews on my visit down soon.

Question Anyone else have anymore leads?

I'm hoping to line up a couple of more interviews while I'm down in the area. I've got one so far
