Default newbie exhaust questions

First off, what are the legal decibal levels for exhausts and do they apply to any specific RPM? Second how close can you come to those decibal levels without getting a ton of police attention? Does the aftermarket exhaust void any of the factory warranty? Also, are most of the cat back exhausts out there bolt on or is there cutting involved?

I will try to answer.... to the best of my knowledge....

- Check your local laws for "noise laws". They may vary location to location and have specific guidelines for testing.

- Attracting unwanted attention is completely up to you and your use of your right foot. Of course a huge shiny, mellon shooter that can be heard and seen will attract attention. Closer to stock = slips under the radar.

- Aftermarket exhuast should not void any warranty, tho some may try...

- Most catbacks are designed to be bolt on, it just depends on the system.

if i am off, please correct me..

I agree with Scooby Blue, with a couple of additions.

I see you are from Towaco, I used to run 202 at night from Boonton to Wayne. Real fun road.

Sound level is largely dependent on the cop. I have never seen them with a sound meter, so just idle it down when you see them.

"Most" of the mainstream systems are close to if not OK for sound levels.

1. the legal level is 93 dba, iirc, that applies at any rpm

2. something listed as a catback is just that, no cutting involved, just bolt on

3. yes it could void your warrenty, depending on your dealer and what problems come about

4. as far as smog legal, if it says it is, it is, should come with a carb sticker, keep that with your car because if you don't have it and it obviously isn't stock, a cop could give you crap about it, but with the sticker he can't do anything

Cat back is emissions legal since it is behind the cat.
