Default Major difference between 98 & 99 2.5 RS?

Hey guys,

I'm looking into buying a 98 2.5RS auto for my wife. I've seen lots of pics of the 99 model year. I noticed that the front bumpers are different and the seats are slightly different. Could someone please let me know of any major differences between the 2 years? or point me to a site that describes this? I've searched this site and the internet already. There seems to be many more 99+ cars than the 98's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the 98 has the phase one engine in it and during the 99 model year run they put phase II's in the 99s...its mainly a head gasket problem...and the 98s have small fogs and 99s went with the larger size...unless youre in canada

so the better engine is the phase II? Is there any precautions I should take when looking at the Phase I?

no precaution is going to stop the phase I from blowing the head gaskets

Phase I DOHC 2.5 NA - mine went at 56k
not all of them go, but a lot of them will
and it's $$$ when they do

i'd steer clear of them

shoot for a phase II SOHC
(99 - 01 impreza 2.5)

Also relatively few 98s were sold, so you won't see many. If the head gasket has already been repaired, there is some evidence that it should be pretty reliable thereafter. So if the 98 has already been fixed, it may be a good deal as the price would tend to be lower than 99 due to the less attractive lights and bumper plus people are scared off by the DOHC engine. Give the dealer a low ball offer in that case.
The 99 does have a small torque advantage in the lower part of the RPM range too.
