Default HELP!! blown engine Q's

My borther has a 1999 Subaru Impreza TS. Last night the engine blew b/c of lack of oil (last oil change was at 12,000km ago). The oil light was flickering on and off, and of course my brother ignored it. anywho, Subaru wants to charge him $2,700 for a used engine with approx $27,000 km (rear ended) and is 170 compression across the board. All together however with installation, the cost will be just over $4000.

Wow. That is a lot of money. So I need to know if there are alternatives for him to consider. Another thing is he wants/needs the car ASAP for business (or else he'll be wanting to drive my baby ) so time is definitely a factor.

Called garage 5 and they have a 3 week min wait, so that's out.

Someone posted http://www.totalautosport.com/ and said some of you have had experiences here, pls respond back if so and let me know if you'd recommend them or not, and what you had done.

Thanks so much!

Please pardon me for being so harsh, but if your brother is ignoring the oil light in his car, perhaps he's too stupid to own a vehicle!!!! Anyone who knows even a little bit about cars knows that once an oil light comes on, the motor is already sustained some kind of irreversible damage.

Furthermore, only chainging oil every 12,000kms?????? The recommended change interval is 6000kms!!!! I wouldn't even let a synthetic oil run that long.

Perhaps the $4000 is a lesson that your brother will heed in the future and remember that cars require a little TLC every once and awhile.

I personally think that $4000 is getting off easy considering the amount of work involved in removing an engine and then replacing with a new one.

lol, no kidding man! If you only knew haw bad he treats his car. Makes me sick. He's always been that way. And yes, I really hope he learns from this, although I wouldn't be surprised if not. All I know is that he ain't touching my ride!

Get this, the oil light was on for almost aweek too!

*sigh* I don't even know why I'm trying to help him, for it's his own stupidity that caused this. meh, must be a caregiving female thing

My brother was in the same situation with his Blazer, but in his case it was because he didn't check his gauges every few minutes and didn't listen to the engine... engine oil drained totally in about 30 seconds... mine did the same, but I turned it off in time. And that's why I don't own a piece of Chev...

Anyway, usually there are two options:
1) rebuild current engine
2) replace engine with newer one

Ask Subaru if the new engine comes with a warranty. It should. If not, you may just want to get the current engine rebuilt. Your brother should expect a bill between $4000 and $10,000... this is common.

That is hella cheap to replace the blown lump. He should consider himself lucky it's only that much. The fact that they were even able to find a motor for a MY99 is impressive. MY99 can only be replaced w/ MY99's apparently (sensors are in different locations - making the wiring harness too short for some); only different EJ22 year. Damn Subaru...

Once I get over this damned cough, I'd be up for anything. At this point in the game nothing would surprise me. I should bite my tongue for saying something so foolish.
