Question Recommendations for muffler for turbo 2.5 Impreza (mine)....

I finally have an answer on my car. It's going down to Temecula to RAW Motorsports to get the header and exhaust custom built, 3" stainless w/Jet Hot coating. But, The muffler isn't included, as RAW doesn't make custom mufflers, just exhaust tubing.

Now, I'm not looking for a muffler that'll advertise to the world "Here I am, Mr. Policeman!", but I would like something that gives a nice tone, and doesn't choke the turbo too badly.

I'm kind of partial to a dual tipped unit, like the Stromung, but are there others like that? Or ones with perhaps slightly larger openings?

i have been very happy with my magnaflow muffler + resonator, and my entire Rallispec 2.5" exhaust system in general. It does drone a bit on the highway, but that's about it. lots of people tell me they really like the sound. it's not too loud either - since i live in the middle of a major metro area, you can safely believe that i am not a big fan of loud obnoxious mufflers.

All I have to say is... XRS. Look for the name in the back of a SCC. Awsome muffler.

hey, since this topic is already here, id like to hear some opinions on some rear sections, or mufflers to swap in place of the OE unit. i need something thats NOT obnoxious, and doesnt drone inside the car. otherwise my dad wont OK it. i saw the SPOmotorsport Stainless muffler for like $320. but, what else is out there? and i am a big fan of the big pencil tips on the muffler, but, not a big fan of the ULTRA ricey sound afforded by the Autozone patch pipe-held-by-a-Coathanger-exhaust note. (honda boys konw what im talkin about! hehe j/j )

I have heard a good flowing muffler for turbo applications is Borla XR-1. They flow well and arn not insanely loud. The only one i have actually herd on a turbo car is on a single turbo Rx-7 that runs mid 10's, with the exhaust on. Im guessing it flows pretty well. But on the Rx-7 it is kinda loud, but a Rx-7 is almost always loud. Hope that helps.

Digital_Boy,

Use my solution!

-Twin Supertrapps, with 12+12 rings with the endcaps on.

They are loud as hell, and I think cops dont really give me a hard time about it because I have endcaps on. If they pulled you over, you could tell them you will decrease the amount of rings to make the exhaust quieter.
If you run into a spot/surprize inspection (like they have here in NJ) on the road, unless some keeps a handy "Allen" wrench on them, they cant give you an emissions test. It takes a few minutes to remove all the endcap bolts and they probably wouldnt want to go through the hassel.
It really gives the car a unique look.

Rich, in my experience Supertrapps are a no win compromise--either you put a lot of disks on and they flow great and are noisy as hell, or you remove disks and by the time you can hear the stereo you have too much backpressure.

In my (limited) experience, the best flow/noise compromises are with a straight through muffler that has plenty of volume and is packed with steel wool or fiberglass.

I'm always amazed at how small the volume is on many of the aftermarket mufflers. No wonder they're so loud!

Listen to the exhaust note on an M3, or S4, or Porsche. Sounds great, but doesn't set off any car alarms. Is the aftermarket ready for an exhaust system that is as quiet as stock, sounds better and flows freely? I know I'd be first in line.

I'd go with X-Tec Motorsport Mufflers (made in Canada) Go with the adjustable muffler... comes in full T-304 stainless steel, fully tunable and rebuildable.

I have heard lots of good things about the magnaflow and that is what I will be going with for my 2.5" turbo-back exhaust.

I have an N-1 on my car now, with a custom 3" catless turbo back setup from Rallispec. It is LOUD, very loud. I like it, but feel after a year of it I want something quieter. What I am looking for is a 3" and under a 3.5" out. Does anybody make something like this?

TMR,
I can't seem to find this XRS muffler anywhere in SCC. Do they have any kind of website?

i'd day use a borla turbo muff. they have a nice deep growl and the turbo will chop up the noise a bit too.

Matt,
I believe that xtec link that GTBGuy posted is the manufacturer of the XRS. They have an XRS listed on their website.
