It uses the normal righty tighty lefty loosey convention. It's just really hard to get off. I ended up using a 24" breaker bar with a bolt and stud remover (don't ask) I looked hi and lo for the proper allen socket and couldn't find one. It's just really really in there. I even attempted to use a chisel and hammer at one point. I just kept working at it and it finally came loose.

Trust me if it was a left hand thread I would have mentioned it.

I feel your pain thought it took me a good part of the day to get it out. I had to drain the oil too for my install. What a messy day.

PS Can you get a pipe or something on the allen for a cheater bar? Is there room to swing it?

Also make sure everything is cold when you try to get it out too.

Thanks for your input Peaty.

I'm going to get my friend that is a lot tougher than me and get him to take a shot at wrenching that thing off.

I thought about draining my oil. But then, I could just take the filter off and replace the filter. Then I would only drain half the oil at most (right?). I already drained the radiator. So, I'm expecting to get another 1.5 to 2 quarts of coolant to shoot at me when I do get the little bugger off.

Exclamation Subaru engine block heater install - need HELP!

Alright, I got my official Subaru engine block heater direct from my dealer.

I have an MY00 2.5RS.

Now, to install it, you must drain all the coolant from the radiator, then drain the rest when you get the coolant plug off the block. I can't get this bugger off!!

Finally, after searching and searching, I got a 14mm Allen wrench (no luck getting a allen socket!!). The wrench fits perfectly.

I just can't get this thing off! My question is this: does it turn the same way the oil filter does for loosening? I tried that way and it won't budge! Now, I may not being applying enough strength. I do know that Subaru uses high-temp sealant on those things so that coolant won't leak. So that may be making it so much harder.

I looked up in www.azscooby.com on how to install the oil cooler which uses the same engine block plug as this block heater. They say it was kind of hard to get off. But I couldn't understand exactly how they did it. They didn't mention which way is screws off. It only makes sense that it would screw off the same direction at the oil filter. I also checked the replacement plug (the heater) threads, and this thoery seems to hold. I'm stuck!!

Someone please know what I am talking about!
