Default Made in Japan = better product?

Wanted to get your thoughts on this topic:

Do you feel more confident in the quality of the product if it is made/assembled in Japan/Germany/Italy/Switzerland as opposed to China/Malaysia/Taiwan?

It shouldn't matter, but it does to a lot of consumers...partly because of proof.

Generally, a Swiss made watch is a finer quality watch than a watch made in Taiwan.

Same goes for cameras/camcorders/lenses.

Lots of items are that way too. Nowadays, you'd be hard pressed to find a hard drive made in Japan, but I think old Quantums were made there.

Cars too.

Common example:

Canon 10D = Made in Japan
Canon Digital Rebel = Made in Taiwan (I think)

Tough pick.
Thoughts?

Not unless you want to kill something with it. Then it's "Made in the USA" all the way.

Yup. My Japanese girlfriend usually wont buy things unless they say "Made in Japan," not because she's ultra-nationalistic or anything, but they just tend to be of a better build quality.

Except for guitars. Made in USA all the way.

Everything else made here, especially most of the people, is crap.

The Japanese are much more disciplined, all the way down to the "factory workers" 9 times out of 10 a Jap product isn'y just within specs, it is exactly on the mark.

A friend and I were having a discussion about this. When it comes to cars American-made typically have lower quality because of the factories. There one factory worker that screws on one part of a car, and only that one for each car. While (correct me if I'm wrong) in Germany factory workers assemble several parts if not the whole car. So they don't get as bored and start losing interest. I forget the process they use in Japan, but I know there is a lot more technology involved in the assembly plants.

If it's a Katana and I want to kill someone with it, it better be made in Japan! Japan=good stuff.

Generally if I want to kill someone I'd prefer to be using something either made in USA or Russia.

In case you didn't know, Americans exported the assembly line manufacturing process to the rest of the world, especially with Japan. Problem is, along the way we sort of lost our way.

I have the impression that Americans excel in Software development and defence products.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Craftsman is just a brand placed on other peoples products as long as they meet the Craftsman requirements for quality. I honestly don't know who makes each Craftsman product I buy.

Don't kow aboot the tools, but the grage door openers used to be Chamberlins when I worked at a Hechingers (now part of Home Depot, I think) at night and Sears by day (my college summers sucked).

Personally I really don't think it matters anymore where stuff is made. I've had sucky things made from all over and good things made from all over. Considering many American cars are built in Mexico and many Japanese cars are built in the USA, it's kind of hard to say much about build quality.
