Default 17" Hard to find?

A mechanic told me to get 18s rather than 17s because it's getting harder to find tires for 17s. Is that true?

Unfortunately its getting to be somewhat true with max performance 16s. Pirelli dropped the Neros in that size (at least 225/50 16) and Michelin isn't making the PS2s in 16s.

Is it true? I want to order new wheels today, and I would prefer 17s but I want to make sure first.

Just did a search on Tire Rack on the most popular 17" size for the WRX: 225/45x17. I limited the search to tires falling in the "max performance", "ultra-high performance" and "ultra-high performance all-season" categories:

52 different tires are available from Tire Rack in that size in those categories - seems like a pretty decent selection to me

of course, that does not include any tires from manufacturers such as Toyo and Falken which Tire Rack does not sell

nor does it include other possible sizes such as 215/45x17, 235/40x17 and 245/40x17 - all of which may work depending upon your wheel width and willingness to roll your fenders

conclusion: fire your mechanic

Almost all of the new legacies and outbacks are coming stock with 17's or its at least a very easy to get option...its not true at all.

17's will be no longer be in production as of end of June. since every car manufacturer is now using 18 in rims standard

my mom just bought a corolla and it came with 18's. 17's are extinct soon .. dont waste your money on 17's

I think you need to find a new mechanic before rims.
