Exclamation Golf GTi Service in DFW - WHERE?

Please help.

My friend is stuck w/ his 2000 Golf GTi in my place now.

He heard his FR tires making noise
It sounds like squeling disc brake cover plate rubbing w/ the disc itself. I checked and found nothing was rubbing .

Also there's obvious play on the wheel when you wiggle it.
The play is like 0deg to +2deg camber play w/ all axle, brake assembly and the axle itself.

I checked the axle nut on the hub and it was properly tightened

Would it be the wheel bearing problem, he's afraid to drive it back to Houston w/ that much play.

Any body knows a good reputable VW shop in Dallas (preferaby North Dallas) that does not charge like stealership?

Advice / reference is appreaciated.

AVOID PARK CITIES VOLKSWAGEN!!!

If its got a lot of play...and there is a grinding noise from the front wheel like you said. Its 99% a wheel bearing. I say this considering you checked the brakes and axle nut.

Take the caliper/rotor off...Pop the axle nut off, and see how the bearing looks. If its as bad as it sounds...it should fall apart when you pull it out.

Keep posted!

I used to have to go to Autobahn in Ft. Worth and ummm yeah

I waited and waited and waited...and waited some more

I don't think I spent less than 3 hrs waiting for the car to get done....and none of the service was complex, it was all oil changes or routine stuffs.

The only good thing I can remember was the fact that they have a constant stock oil pans. I know because I cracked one and had to replace it. I ended up keeping the old and busted one and I still have it.

Collegedropout...bring me your pan, and I will TIG weld the damage for ya. Hella good insurance against another curb check. I fix 1-2 MB/VW oilpans a month now, on the side. Some of those Benz oil pans are more than $600!!

I don't need to fix the old one. The act of stupidity happened is history and a funny story. However, I keep the oil pan to remind me not to be a stupid punk kid behind the wheel.

A replacement pan is only $124. It was just cheaper to replace it at the time. Then the next day the oil plug fell out while driving down the road pulled in to walmart (covered 4 spots in walmart's parking lot with oil ) replaced it with the one from the old one.

Come to think of it no wonder the turbo (TDi) was dead at 60k miles

I can still bring it by if you need practice , but I don't need to get it fixed. I think aluminum cans would be better practice for the skillz.

I would suggest Boardwalk VW, but only if your friend goes during the day, and have him talk to Steve. My bro has a GTI 337 and he had a bunch of problems with the night service manager at Boardwalk, but apparently this Steve guy is really cool. It's not in Dallas, but it's another option.

The 2 places i have bought my VW's from were Metro and Hiley. Metro actually drove my car out to my house for drop off at no extra cost and i live in arlington, which was pretty nice. But yeah neither company has given me **** for the sales part. Hileys service can sometimes be a little iffy but they dont have that 3 hour long waiting like at Autobahn.

That's really cool that they would drive your car to you! Have you done any mods to your GTI? The 20th Anniv. looks really nice, especially in black.

Finally he got it fixed in Richardson at reasonable price.

You are right Scott.
It was the wheel bearing.

But he's got only 70K miles.
I don't think I ever had wheel bearing problem w/ my prev. cars before even I hit 90K or more.

Foresters and Legacy wagons are notorious for 55k and up rear wheel bearing "crap-outs".

Glad he got it fixed Glad my guess turned out right too.
