Technical ECU question

What exactly does the MY00 2.5RS Impreza ECU do? I understand that it controls fuel/air mixtures... OK, how? What else does it do, and how?

I understand that the answer may be lengthy and difficult to understand, but I am up to it.

I really need to know exactly what the chip controls and how.
