Post Anyone want cheap a$$ WRX shop manuals

Hey, if I can get 8 or 9 heads together that want the shop manuals but don't feel like forking out $900 cash I can buy them and proly have our media center print up and bind 7 or 8 additional sets. We each pitch in $100 and I handle paper, printing and binding. Possible!?

woops!

Yeah, that's about right.

I volunteer to supply the originals. Anything you guys can do to help me offset the cost of these puppies is much appreciated.

I've got them right here and ready to go, and frankly I couldn't give a (suicidal lab) rat's a$$ about copyright, copyleft, or copy any direction.

It isn't legal; not if you buy it off one of us, however, if one of us owns a set and copies and distributes it for free to their club members, of course we would have to buy paper and pay for binding ( roughly a hundred bucks each!? ), then I feel no responsibility as I did not copy and distribute for profit. So, I will find out if paper will need to be purchased or if my media center will foot the bill, how many pages total? Necromancer? I would like to drop this for printing this week if possible. Tomorrow I will know exactly what this is going to take in the way of paper and then we can take a tally of who wants a set and collect money while the printing is in process, takes 3 or 4 days, then hopefully I could have them at my place for the install fest. A little optimistic but possible...

I'd estimate about 6000 pages (they take up about 20" on the bookshelf). The books are bound in a simple way with glue along the spine, not like the old 3-ring binders ('93-'00). So somebody has to stand at the copy machine, turn the page, put it on the glass, wait for 10 copies, and repeat 6000 times or so. I'd imagine the labor cost is going to be somewhat more than the paper and binding.

Since somebody had to ask about legality, I gotta disagree with SLR there. These books are not covered by the GNU Public License or whatever -- there's no "free redistribution allowed" clause. So it's not legal regardless of whether or not you help share the cost of the books with me. And frankly, as I mentioned above, I was hoping that would be the case. As much as I love you guys, I'd rather not end up with a set of books with their binding totally jacked, pages falling out, and nothing to show for it.

And Bill, okay, let me just fork over $900 of my unemployment check (oh wait, it's not that big ... gotta take a loan I guess) and buy you those manuals so you can make a copy.

I should proly clarify,
"It isn't legal; not if you buy it off one of us, however, if one of us owns a set and copies and distributes it for free to their club members ... then I feel no responsibility as I did not copy and distribute for profit." I simply meant _I_ don't feel guilt for this action.

As for maintenance of the original copy and such, the intent was to pool money for the purchase of a new set, though even better to offset your cost, It costs me ~$100 for a 50K paper ream, and the media center hear would handle printing and saddle binding ( which is probably identical to the binding in the original set ); fortunately it is a two sided process so no standing at the printer flipping as long as the book is unbound. I planned to do this with a group purchased copy and can certainly understand you not wanting your copies dissected for this project.
Your points are well taken regarding the legalities, so, it may be that I should desist from this offer, I certainly don't want to create any sort of legal rift, it was just a thought, as I had the facility to make it possible. I appreciate your candor impute, I don't want to do this if anyone is uncomfortable with it...

I don't mind to sacrifice the originals as long as you guys share at least 75% of the cost. Simply because it prevents me from being able to sell them at a later time, and I end up with a bunch of jacked up service manuals.

So SLR, you can go ahead and figure out the pricing based on that. Cool?

Will do...
Just thought I should note, they will be professionally bound and cover/spine/bcover printed. I actually checked on it today, they wanted to see the current binding to determine how long ( if it can be done at all ) it will take, apparently they throw the book in the binder to remove the existing binding, but there are particular bindings that would require they cut the spine free ( takes longer and they may not want to do it ). When you said 6000 pages, is that numbered sides or paper count? Maybe I should hook up with you to borrow or check out one of the books. I think we could get you closer to 90% of your $ back; I figured the cost should be divided evenly by all recipients.

I need to hook up with Necromancer and get my hands on one of his books so I can get a ye or nay from our media department for printing/binding. Necromancer? Still interested? Let me know, I can meet with you somewhere or we could hook up at the install fest Sat. the 5th.
