Question steering wheel is rattling on hard right turns

When I take hard right turns my steering wheel rattles like it is loose inside. It does not seem to do it on left turns. I think I might have heard of this happening after an accident but I have never hit anything to knock it out of alignment. Anyone else have this or know why it does it?

Wouldn't happen to be your keys hitting the steering column would it? Took me a while to notice that

i would check:

the weights on the wheels - did you loose one?

dirt in the wheels - is the wheeel out of balance?

and if all else fails.. get an alignment.

If you're understeering, it might be a little bit of wheel hop. That'll make the steering wheel rattle a little bit.

Breaking the front inside tire loose while cornering hard--power understeer--feels that way too.

I think this is normal, both of the RS's I've driven have a rattle which sounds like its coming from somewhere in the steering column, but only when taking a very tight corner and going over a bump at the same time. Subaru mechanic said it was normal, too. If it happens under other circumstances, I'd get it checked out. BTW, this really bothered me for a while (a brand new car shouldn't rattle!), but now it's just part of the car's character, along with a couple of dozen other rattles, squeaks, clicks, clunks and burbles that my car makes. Imprezas are not quiet cars!

from what I've seen there are like 3-5 joints for the steering wheel to connect to the main column. What I theorise is that the wheels start to slip and vibrate up and down. Then the column (since it's connected directly in the wheels) will absorb the vibration and send it up the "stupidly designed" steering column up to your hands.

If you want it to stop, get a better suspension, that will make the tires stick to the road until they can't.

I've had my car for almost 2 years now and I have no rattles. What can I do to fix this?

Find the nearest washboarded dirt or gravel road and drive up and down it for about two hours. That'll fix you right up.
