Unhappy failed smog test

Just bought a 00 impreza rs went to get it smogged they said it failed cause of a fuel trim malfunction which causes my CEL to be on. If i take off my battery terminals and get my CEL light off temporary will it pass the smog test?? Can anyone let me know, muchly appreciated

What state are you in? Does your emission test incorporate an OBDII scan? If it does, a reset is not your answer because this will set the OBDII readiness test status to "not ready" and cause you to fail. You would need to drive the car for enough time to complete the readiness tests again, by which time the CEL might return.
You would be far better off finding out what the actual code is and taking the necessary steps to track down and correct the underlying cause, rather than just trying to mask it to pass an inspection. Chances are that whatever it is is causing your car to not run as well as it should, as well as using more fuel.
