Default Speed Rating Question

OK, so tires have a speed rating. The stock tires are something like V rated, which is good up to 149 MPH. There are other ratings like W, Y, and Z which have a higher speed rating. My question is this:

Does the rating of a tire affect
(a) performance
(b) life

The reason I ask this is because I've seen the same tires offered at different speed ratings. I never drive over 149MPH (I probably wouldn't ever go above 110MPH, and an 90MPH cap would probably work OK for me). Is there any reason I would want to pay for a higher speed rating when I don't go that fast anyway?

speed rating effects alot of aspects in a tire ... the most notable are:

Performance
stability
handling
steering response
temperature

and typically the tire life is shorter ..... (but, not in all cases)

So if I'm looking at a goodyear F1 gs-d3 for example and there is a WR rated tire and a YR rated tire for $1 more per tire, the YR will perform better?

Also, would I ever notice the performance difference if I never plan on going more than 90MPH or autocross speeds?

you really probably would not notcie any difference between those 2 ...... now if you were to compare an "H" rated version of a given tire to a "Y" rated version you would notice a difference
