Question Changing the Air Filter

It might sound stupid, but I can't figure out how to properly open the airbox and swap the filter without feeling that I am ripping everything apart.

I can't believe that a so beautifully engineered car would have such cumbersome procedure for a simple task.

This is how I do it: (2.5RS 2002)

1 - remove big plastic pipe (1) going from the fender to the airbox.
2 - remove all rubber ducts (3) going to airbox
3 - remove 2 screws (one each side) from the airbox
4 - losen up connection to throttle body
5 - remove clamps on airbox (3)

then, the back part of the airbox hits the HVAC ducts and won't get out without squishing the filter and bending the rubber connection to the throttle body.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Thanks for any advice.

I've got a 2000 2.5, and the way I do it is to:
take out the 2 bolts holding the airbox
loosen off the clamp at the throttle body
pull the whole airbox back and out, then change the filter.
I assume it be the same for a 02?

I don't know if it is different for the 2002. When I get the airbox back, I can't get it up because of the AC lines.

But wait, you said to get the WHOLE airbox out without opening it? It might work... I'll try tonight. :-)

Thanks.

Hey Bender! It worked! My mistake was to try to take off just the back of the airbox (it works on my wife's Legacy). Taking the whole airbox out it is much easier!

Thank You
