Helix Power has just released their high-flow metal substrate catalytic converter downpipe for the Subaru Impreza WRX/STI. We air-freighted in 10pcs for those that are interested. Supply is VERY limited. If this is what you are looking for, please order yours today

This particular downpipe incorporates Helix Power’s first-rate bell-mouth downpipe, with the addition of a 200 cell Metal-Substrate high-flow catalytic converter and thermal barrier heat-shield. The 200 cell Metal-Substrate downpipe has been tested by us to yield 7-10whp over the factory twin cats, while able to pass stringent California smog standards. The thermal barrier heat-shield assists in rapid warm-up of the cat for maximum efficiency and helping to reduce engine bay temperatures.

if those are the mods on the car when it was tested...........seems a little too good to be true, but WOW!

Looks like all the Cali people will be buying one to pass smog.

I'll DEFINITELY be buying one (not now.. but someday.. haha) to go with the Helix catback I'm putting on my car soon. I need to be emissions compliant and this makes it way easier instead of finding a downpipe with a high flow cat that'll mate up to my catback. This makes me very happy!

Does the Helix dp fit up with the remainder of the factory piping? Or does one need to have 3" piping all the way back?
Thanks, looks like a great dp.

The old Helix turboback setup was pretty darn loud. Any idea how much this cat will quiet things down? Also, any plans to sell the turboback now as a catted package of both DP and catback?

Drews_WRX - Yes those were the exact mods at time of testing

spike, MT_WRX - Yes it will bolt up to the stock catback

adg016 - Yes, perfet fit for the Helix catback

wrpmission - The catless DP's are still $285 shipped.

hyp36rmax - The car won't even come close to passing CA emissions without any cats. The cat is a custom unit, designed for us directly from the manufacturer of the metal substrate itself... not a re-badged Random Tech.

mrazntre - $550 shipped

adg016 - The cat will quiet things down a bit, but not to the extent that a stock DP would. All current packages for the un-catted DP would carry over for the catted version.. just add $100 to the price

Thanks

how much hp loss would you guesstimate that you loose from a uncatted helix dp to a catted helix dp? Or better question how much do you get from an uncatted helix dp, since from this one you get 7 - 10? Sorry the confusing sentences...

Too bad passing the sniffer is a lot different than passing smog, otherwise I'd have a non-cat helix for sale. Maybe Helix/Gruppe-S wants to try for a CARB EO? :-)

I agree. This is a confusing statement. 7-10HP gains vs what? Completely stock vs stoch plus just DP?

Any reviews, any sound clips?

"tested by us to yield 7-10whp over the factory twin cats"

"spike, MT_WRX - Yes it will bolt up to the stock catback"

From those two statements I'd assume that they mean *stock* vs. *stock with only the Helix DP*, but I'd rather know than assume.....

so, what's the answer?

Any idea on how much WHP difference there is between this pipe and a short downpipe with the stock third cat?

If that is the case, isn't that a little low compared to other DPs?

Is this a very restrictive cat? Ideally, I would want to see the cat in the third position, not the second as is the case here. Does it make that much of a difference?

hyp36rmax - In California there is also a visual inspection.. it's pretty obvious if you have stock or aftermarket parts on the car so if you need to go to a ref station for some sort of exhaust related ticket they will do a visual. You can't really get a CARB certifcation for any sort of aftermarket cat (only stock replacement types)... even if it's an EPA approved type (which must be 400 cell.. which makes it somewhat pointless).

Focus4, HerculesPeanut - Power gain numbers are compared with a stock DP. This is inline with other downpipes (including ones that positon the cat in the 3rd cat location which we've also tested and not shown any significant power gains.. pretty much all JDM barnds have the cat in the 2nd cat location). There are obviously more gains to be had with other exhaust components and the gain will be higher if the car is heavily modified (ie upgraded turbo etc).

troll - Sorry we haven't tested that type of downpipe before but the difference won't be much (< 5 hp)

Thanks

with that in regard, i've been contemplating a setup with your catted dp, and weld on the stock heatshield, and possibly heat wrap the dp as well, all this for the roadside emissins that are now held in Socal, my car is cobb tuned with their stage 2, so if i roll through the mechanical detector i should clear will i not?

my idea is based on the fact your car did pass the smog portion (with more bolt ons in place then the avg stage 2 car), while the heatshield treatment that i plan is really only a temp detterant from the California nazis..... IE quick glance..... (stealth factor)
