Default 205? 215? 225? which has the widest tire patch for the stock rims?

since i've recently painted my stock wheels and they look really good i've decided to keep them. but, i can't decide on a tire size for some new rubbers. i've read and heard that on the stock rim putting wider tires arn't going to give you any more foot print, just sidewall buldge. i plan on going with a ?/45/16 which ever it is. thanks justin

It would help if you told us what wheel your talking about.

225s on a stock wrx rim, is too wide for the 6.5 and will probalby hinder performance.

get a 205 50 16. or 215 45 16. All depends on how off you want your speedo to be.

225/50-16 is the best bet.

Hafta watch the load rating on that kind of thing....you may end up buying a tire that has insufficient load capability.

225 on a stock wrx rim will cause the sidewalls to buldge, and it will affect the contact patch in my opinon.

....well...most manufacturers list the 225/50 for a 6"-8" rim width...so....

Yeah, I'd rather see it on a 7" or even a 7.5"....but....

depends on the tire, too...some are a lot wider than others...

they are the stock wrx rims, 16x6.5. and why a 50 series tire? wouldn't haveing a 45 make the tire spin a little faster?

...maybe...you have to be careful that you get tires with sufficient load range...and a tire size for one manufacturer may be different for another...or even different tires.

So some research on what you are asking and you can answer your own questions...the answers are out there

The lower the aspect ratio, generally the wider the rim needs to be. I was going to go with the 45 or even the 40 series but the contact patch wasn't good enough. UncleScotty pointed out the need to be carefull with the load rating and he is right, but with a little search you can find 40 and 45 series tires with the proper load range. In the end I went with P225/50R/16 in the BFG KDWS and I am very pleased, I can still turn'em over but the traction is vastly improved. Contact patch on these on stock rims is 9.50 inches.

Whoa, 9.5 in on stock rims

zavala, what car do you have?

I have a TS with stock WRX 205/55/16's. Luke@tirerack told me that I need 205/50/16 to keep the gear ratio intended by the manufacturer. Because the 55 series is 3/4 of an in bigger in diameter than 50 series, my car is slower off the line; on the plus side the engine turns slower at any given speed.

I'll take the quickness off the line plus the shorter sidewall of the 50 series!

I'll be ordering mine soon!

Question: to keep the same size as the 205/50/16, yet get wider, would I do 225/45/16, or what?

I had stock sized S03s on my wagon, and with a tire that sticky (as is the T1S) I didn't find contact patch to be an issue.
