Default Stoopid internet makes me spend too much money on my car.

Stock WRX. Everything is fantastic. Quick little bugger. Then I get on I-club and NASIOC and ever other frickin WRX board.

First its the fog covers, front lip, and strut bar... all in one box (who did I buy this from? It was so long ago.) Never install the lip (and finally sold it.) Time passes.

Time to convert all the inside lights to red. Screw it up. Buy indiglo gauge face. Ick. Screw that up. Buy USDM STi guage. Yay! Someday I'll fix that dang cruise switch and window switch. Oh and that frickin clock! Hate that green clock. Gonna have to get some gauges.

Presets change themselves... ok, buy new headunit. Oooo, Eclipse... it's pretty. Pick up a center console for dirt cheap on eBay cuz it's got the armrest extension. Then the uber rear view mirror. Time passes.

Better pick up an 'I' badge for the front grill. Finally pick up some Rotas from SubyDude. Hey, is that a good deal on a JDM front grill... sure it was. Ruin the 'I' badge trying to transfer it to the new grill. Here come the new side skirts, painted to match the car.

Whoa, whats in these big boxes? My used v7 exhaust. Which is sitting on my porch. Its waiting for the v7 uppipe that should show up in two weeks with the JDM rear window/wiper combo.

Good lord, look at my bank account! Glad I didn't get those stupid folding mirrors... the install might have killed me. Mental note: buy exhaust gaskets. Is that all? Sadly no... JDM HIDs scheduled to arive on the 7th, according to FedEx tracking. And then theres the AccessPORT, bought used... it might show... you never know about these online sellers now do you?

Holy cow, I think the Eclipse headunit is almost a year old! That touchscreen Kenwood looks pretty cool....

MAKE IT STOP!!!

that
s nothign really. My rx7 is always in a state of disrepair and it sends me to the poorhouse constantly. I have no free time because i'm busy preping/restoring the car for track use. Part of it is me part of it is the addiction. you've got it easy.

I just laugh at myself. There is no state of disrepair, unless you count the mess in the back seat.

Rough estimate...

car pymts $7,520
maint. $120
gas $1,021 (low miles)
parts $4,950
insurance $1,600

= $15,211

And I've only had it for a year and a half.

Still, I'm happy with it. And there isn't too much buyer's remorse for the purchases. I do regret the Mr. Clean AutoDry car wash, which I didn't include... $20. What a piece of crap. That and the 'I' badge. And the lip, that I sold - so thats even, I suppose. And these uber $$$ HIDs on the way that will point the wrong direction & get me pulled over for blinding people. Sigh... can't wait for my first waranty denial.

Look at it this way - it's better to mod the car when it's young so you can enjoy the mods for the most amount of miles That was my rationalization. I figure if I can resist buying an STi/Evo I can probably keep the Subie until it explodes. (and then rebuild it, with an EJ22-T and a 6-speed)

<sniff> I guess I'm just un-satisfied. Bling, but no props. Here a couple of typical scenarios...

[me] Hey... check out the car!
[girlfriend] You're wheels are brown.
[me] Bronzzzzze
[girlfriend] They look dirty.
[me] Are you gaining weight?

[roommate] What did you buy now?
[me] It's a grill!
[roommate] To cook burgers on?
[me] No, for the car.
[roommate] What, is yours broken? Isn't that still under waranty?
[me] No, no, no... you don't understand... it's JDM.
[roommate] Huh?
[me] You just don't understand.
(funny thing is... he's JDM... half japanese half american)

[girlfriend] ...why can't we go on this trip?
[me] I can't afford it right now.
[girlfriend] Why not? Did you buy something expensive?
[me] Yeah, I got these cool lights for my car.
[girlfriend] What, like neon?
[me] No, headlights.
[girlfriend] What, are yours broken? Aren't they still under waranty?
[me] Fatty!

[roommate] Um, there's a muffler on the porch.
[me] Yup. <grin>
[roommate] Are you saving all those boxes?
[me] You'll never understand.

I suppose there's no sympathy to be found. Well, screw you guys... I'm gonna cruise eBay for the elusive JDM pop-up navigation screen, a right-hand drive gear shift knob, and a nice STi tissue box cozy. I'll forget all my woes by shooting out a few PayPals.

Don't stop now! Wanna buy my xxx used part for really cheap? You know you want more. If fatray included labor, he coulda had two wrxs, but he has a BADass unique car.

I think being a heroin or crack addict would be cheaper then being a WRX owner (maybe not as fun but still cheaper)...I've blown like 5g's in the last 2 months. And **** is still coming, my AP should be here this week

I think my car is only worth like $2500 if it was stock, $1500 before I converted it to AWD. I think I've put close to $8000 into it.

And it just doesnt stop there.. like most of us here, we'll spend more money MAINTAINING the darn car as well.. ($600+ on suspension rebuilds, another $500 for other misc. parts that needs replacing..) it just doesnt stop, especially when you make the WRX into ALL THREE: a daily driver, an autocrossing car, and a lightly tracked car...

"Hi, my name is Keefe, and I had over 6 sets of rims for the WRX.. 3 sets of turboback exhuasts, 2 ECUs, two sets of coilovers, $1500 in body damages, gone through over 6 sets of brakes pads, 1 stock clutch, a set of stock rotors, over 30 oil changes, over 10 brake bleeds, 3 coolant flushes, 2 tranny flushes, and 3 blown fuses for electronics. Oh yea, the car is just over 2 years old with 70k on it soon."

The pursuit to just spend more and more money on the car to keep the owner happy.. so bliss.. until you get the bill.

I can rationalize almost all of it too. Its just when I drive by that lonely looking STi in the Subaru lot... I slap my forhead & exclaim... "I could have had a v8!"

I say the same thing (well, something along the lines of "8k closer to a V8") but I enjoy the fact that my car is unique and fun. More fun to build it than to buy it.
