Default Lost .5 in 1/8th with typhoon

I installed a typhoon with a stock Sti and lost 5 tenths in 1/8 mile. Thought it need to relearn drove for a week went back and same result. Switched back to stock at track and next run went back to my average times

mowgli, is this the sti specifc baffled short ram, short ram, or cold air intake. It seems there are a few different styles. Thanks.

I would not believe it if I didn't test it. My car runs 8.6 all day long stock in 1/8, with k&n the best it would do 9.2/9.1. I guess the computer sees too much air and backs it off. Also I remove the stock air filter and it slowed it down also. I guess with engine mangement it may add performance. I am installing a downpipe and mid pipe and see what happens.

Well I've got engine management so I'm not too worried, but I guess it's proof that the dyno and the realworld often are not aligned. I think that the truth is you won't see any real performance gains with intakes on the STI without engine management period.

How exactly did you determine that it was the result of the intake? No det? Fuel? Weather? Etc...

Well, one thing for sure is that the loading of a 1/8 mile run is lot different than a 3rd gear pull on a dyno, so the results are not surprising even if all things are equal. If ANYTHING is different and the engine is highly loaded the ecu may react by pulling timing. It is known that the STI can knock stock without additional mods. So, more than likely an intake without engine management is a waste of money.

mowgli, it would be cool if you boosted the octane of your gast to see if that would help any.

I'm not giving up on the typhoon. I determined that it was the intake because I switched at the track. Did back to back runs. I'm all for dyno's for tuning but in the real world its all about getting down the track

Mowgli-

Stupid question, but when you installed the intake you did disconnect the battery and and grounded the positive cable (disconnected from battery of course) to clear computer memory so that it could relearn?

Never hurts when you change something about your car. Not always necessary.
