The rev limiter seems to vary a bit from car to car. You won't be hitting it in 5th gear... at least not on level ground. The RS' top speed is limited by aerodynamics, no gearing.

I've been with 3 RSes in various modified forms at over 120MPH and i know they had 500-700RPMs left...

Though i was in my Legacy Turbo, whose automatic keeps the revs ~800RPM lower and whose speedo maxes at 140, not 120

With a turbo on the car I would think in 5th gear you could hit the rev. limiter (if there is one)

5700-5800RPM gets you to the top speed (without hige backwinds) of 130mph. The guage will be pointing towards the center of the M in MPH. I've got a picture of Revision's heads up display after a run up the expressway reading 129mph (and I was just barely pulling away). Wish I had a boost guage on my car, though... want to see if I got any pressure out of my intake design...

you all with RS's must be pushin well over 130 for ur max, cuz i own a 1995 Impreza Fwd 1.8L L coupe with a wimpy 110hp, and ive gotten it up to 123mph and only at 4900rpms in 5th, it was still pullin, not much, but it wasnt done yet.

Liquid Calm,
There is a rev limiter that kicks in at about 6400rpm. As long as you've got the power to reach it, it'll happen regardless of what gear you're in.

edekker - Yeah, yeah... keep rubbing in that power thing.

BTW, it's 6250 RPM unless you have an aftermarket ECU or a MY98 with a 6500 RPM rev limiter.

I have got my car to red line going down the altomont pass. The gauge was well past 120 and was pointing straight down(i think,i was looking at all the cars i was flying by at the time)

8,
The redline may be 6250rpm, but the rev limiter kicks in later. On my tach, it reads almost 6400rpm when it happens.

It's probably being innacuurate (damn stock tach's). Hmmmmm... I wished I bounced off the rev limiter higher.

Lightbulb

To solve this rev limiter question once and for all, can someone with a S-AFC go and hit the rev limiter and recall the highest RPM afterwards to see what the magic number is? I will do it tonight if I remember to.

The rev-limiter is definitely past the redline. I'm almost positive that it's set at 6450(I think I read that on here). Oh well, I'll hit it everyday regardless.

Thumbs up

Well,

131mph = 5,850 rpm - about all the RS can do fighting the wind on flat ground...

My car has seen that a few times, before the turbo, with just a Larry's cold air intake, AMSOIL air filter and Stromung exhaust. The beauty of it was I was driving at 6,000 feet above sea-level!

Downhill the RS can hit the 6,250 rpm fuel shut off at about 139-140mph (at sea-level) with just a few mods. Stock on flat ground is supposed to be 127mph, according to Sport Compact Car Magazine. This picture was posted a while back here on iClub...

PS: EDIT - picture didn't show up...

I've seen past that in my car. At night on the 101 (Hollywood) FWY coming back from the street races. the needle was at the end of the "T". Took forever and a day to get there though. Oh how I wish 5th gear was shorter and we had a 6th.

i got it up around 125 or so and it still had some pull and revs left to go.

subyracer-i think its a psychological thing. i used to drive an 88 GL wagon whose speedo went to 135, in a car that could barely make 95 and would be shaking like it had parkinsons.

OK, I did it. I sat in the car and bounced the rev limiter in neutral. The S-AFC read 6420. This is on a 2000 RS. Results might vary from different model years. Try it on your own car for best results.

I have a '98 and my redline is 6500 and rev limiter at 6750. On my way to work this morning, I was doing 100 at redline in 4th. The car is geared to go 148MPH at redline.

yeah, the rev-limiter is a bit beyond the red-line, and the actual engine redline is even higher than that. all about safety

Subyracer,

That speedo shot was on a NON-turbo RS, not a turbo with 55hp more than you... As for me, the 5,850 rpm in 5th gear at 131-132 mph was at 6,000 feet above sea-level with only intake and exhaust, and is extraordinary!

The MY00 are geared for about 139-140mph at fuel 6,250 rpm fuel cut off. I'll have to see where my fuel cutoff is (i.e. is it 6,420 like nizz).

Lastly, I imagine while the stock speedo is fairly accurate to 120 mph, going past the 120 and off the dial may not be linear. Your best bet for top speed is using the tachometer and multiplying by the number of mph per rpm. For my MY00 it is approximately 22.4mph per 1,000 rpm. My turbo RS, with 50 psi fuel pressure did 6,000 rpm in 5th Wednesday = 134.4 mph at 6,000 feet above sea-level. With 80 psi at full boost, I expect 140mph redline runs. EGT's were fine thankfully.

Larry www.ImprezaRS.com

[edit - that's 80 psi fuel pressure, not boost]
